Until Next Year...

December is, traditionally, a quiet time in the blogosphere. So while I go for a long walk around the eastern bloc, and all the other sandwich makers practice adulthood, there will be no more munchies until the new year. But we still have a big backlog of unknown artists and world-class MP3s, so be sure to submit your email address (in the sidebar) and we'll let you know when your MP3s are back on the table in 2008!

So until then, eat lots of Christmas Pudding.

The Sidewalk Regrets

Brisbane, Australia
With the untimely passing of singer Jami Thomson back in 2000, a young Brisbane band was all but forgotten by the greater Brisbane indie scene. But while the surviving members fled in different musical directions, a minor cult following remained to mourn the loss of a promising talent, and wonder what might have become of The Sidewalk Regrets.

Frank & The Steins

Wollongong, Australia

"Nowadays the world is becoming increasingly materialistic, and mankind is reaching toward the very zenith of external progress, driven by an insatiable desire for power and vast possessions. Yet by this vain striving for perfection in a world where everything is relative, they wander even further away from inward peace and happiness of the mind."

So So Modern

Wellington, New Zealand
If Cut Off Your Hands were to drink red cordial and stick their fingers in a power socket, they'd sound something like So So Modern, who are building a strong reputation as the most well travelled antipodeans since Alby Mangels. And on the back of punk-disco friends Robocop Kraus, a generous record label, and rising popularity of their own, their seemingly endless world safari is sure to continue...

Deep Sea Arcade

Sydney, Australia
Only once before have I been compelled to introduce an artist without a take-away MP3 for you to munch on. That was Whitley, back in October last year. This time its a new Sydney band who were reluctant to part with their 'draft' recordings in advance of an album to be recorded professionally early next year.

Alot of people criticise bands who try too hard to be The Beatles. If you are one of these supercilious snobs than I challenge you to judge Deep Sea Arcade and tell me you don't like them, and for a reason other than 'they sound like The Beatles'. Leave your musical loftiness on the surface and dive into one of the most exciting new deep sea discoveries this year...

Villains Of Wilhelm

Brisbane, Australia
The Villains of Wilhelm describe their sound as The Strokes having sex with The Smashing Pumpkins while The Rolling Stones watch. I had disturbing visions of Julian Casablanca and Keith Richards unconscious on the sofa with their pants around their ankles, as Billy Corgan zips up his fly and walks away with a big grin on his face.
While you may not blow your load over this R-rated sound, I still recommend you stand with your back to the wall and have a good listen.
