TGIFF - Thank god it's fucking Friday! Well to be honest it wasn't a bad week at all but as I am only the norm, I always look forward to a good weekend. Anyway, I'm only going to be short but sweet... and by sweet I mean by posting a good solid band. These guys are a group from Melbourne and sound similar to Maximo Park but are definitely different in their own way (I hate comparing bands to other bands but I have to be quick). Faster. Anyway, they're called Tic Toc Tokyo - great name too, kudos for that... Have a listen to these tracks, you won't be disappointed.

Tic Toc Tokyo - Action Time
Tic Toc Tokyo - I Am An Amateur
Tic Toc Tokyo - No Nightingales

I couldn't find anything on upcoming tours to Sydney or any EP's but I'll let you know when they unfold (and I hope they do!).

Better go... I am running so late!

One last quick one before I go to bed. Just came across this Perth band The Wednesday Society. I can only describe it as sounding like Bloc Party with the lead singer of The Hold Steady charging on speed (at least for the song Can Can), for some reason it works. TRUST ME.
You WILL like what you hear. Check these tracks out...

The Wednesday Society - Can Can
The Wednesday Society - Care To Polka
The Wednesday Society - POP

See their MySpace site for upcoming shows...

I'm a sucker for a band that can rock out... no not like Jet - Anyone who personifies AC/DC should be stabbed, then shot, force fed arsenic then run over by a steam roller leaving the body to rot while little starving midgets eat the remains (ok I have this thing for midgets). How many times have you heard "the saviours of rock 'n roll"? Why is rock 'n roll getting rescued all the time? Shit I'm going nowhere with this. Ok get back to the point Hutcho.
I heard this great song over the radio today by an outfit from the 'gong, The Watt Riot. Thrashing guitar hooks, heavy drums and solid vocals to back it up - I was hooked. I found myself reaching for the volume turning it up loud, windows down, arm hanging out tapping to the beat. I felt cool. That is until I pulled up next to some fully sick Nissan with some would be gangsters at the wheel. Windows up, volume down, shrinking down into my seat. Coolness fading, fading. Gone.
Anyway the song was 'All or Nothing' and I recommend you grab it while it's free on MySpace. I've linked it below with a few of their other songs. In fact, one of their songs has cowbells... yes cowbells!

The Watt Riot - All or Nothing
The Watt Riot - One Tww Thr
The Watt Riot - Keep On Keepin' On
The Watt Riot - Loving Tree

The Watt Riot are playing at The Annandale Wednesday April 5th. More information here.
Also support this top little band by buying their EP here.

Those pesky cousins of ours from across the Tasman are good for two things - rugby and music (some would argue three and mention movie stars but Russell Crowe was born there). Anyways on a tip from the great Red Riders of Sydney over MySpace I checked out this NZ group Pluto and I liked what I heard. They've actually been around since 2001 and appear to be quite the popular band in NZ (they even played at South by South West in 2004). Unfortunatley they haven't cracked the Aussie scene as yet but I'm sure that's around the corner with a brief tour to Sydney and Melbourne towards the end of April and a recent release of an LP titled Pipeline Under The Ocean (hang on I just got it - P-ipe L-ine U-nder T-he O-cean). From some of the tracks I've heard the album is simply excellent with a wide range of influences WHICH I CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO MENTION - no I'm not a journalist and I don't want to be one. You can listen to a couple from their website or MySpace anyway. Here are two tracks linked off their site:

From Pipeline Under The Ocean which you can purchase here.
Pluto - Long White Cross
Pluto - Dance Stamina

Pluto are playing at Spectrum - Sydney April 26th
Rob Roy Hotel - Melbourne April 27th

Also just wanted to add that those great guys from Asteroids have presented us with our very own can of Manwich. Can't wait to sink my teeth into that one.

Monday, March 27, 2006

After such a great weekend it's a reality check to be sitting in your little office on a Monday morning (well it's actually 12:15... still feels like morning) taking your first sip of your large flat white, strong please! and pondering just 'what the fuck am I doing here?'. Make sense anyone? Slightly incoherent? Well fuck ya, it's Monday.

Ok I'm feeling a little better now. Time to focus on something good. Well Monday morning wasn't all bad. Got this great little email in my inbox this morning, a satirical send up of one of Australia's biggest flops in advertising campaigns. It would be un-Australian not to watch this.

This Saturday one of my favourite aussie bands are hitting up The Annandale. The Drones. These guys have an incredible raw, filthy sound which makes you feel like you're covered in grimy dirt just listening to them. Actually that sounds terrible but I can promise you that getting down and dirty is an uplifting experience every once in a while. Occasionally when it rains I strip down naked and run to the park then roll around in the mud squealing like a pig...
Anyway only $10 to see these guys... that's a bargain I tells ya!. More info here.

From Spooky Bootlegs Volume 1
The Drones - The Miller's Daughter

Live on PBS radio 2005
The Drones - The Down Bound Train

Jimi Hendrix cover, Manic Depression
The Drones - Manic Depression

Also check out their 2005 hit, Shark Fin Blues at their MySpace website. Buy their latest album 'Wait long by the river and the bodies of your enemies will float by' from here. Well worth it too... one of my top 5 favourite albums of last year.

YEEEEEUW! Good work for gettin our respective arses off the ground, Hutchenburg!
Now I’m not too sure how all this works.... For any lost souls meandering through this blog, I'm chucky, the one with the penchant for red icypoles. And the girls that eat them.
Anyway... heres a vegemite sandwich to get us started, eh? I just read a SXSW review which talked up The Flairz . Go Kids! They’re about 11 years old from Perth. I think the chick sings cause her voice is deeper than the boys. Apparently a debut album out this year. I got one song, ‘Rock and Roll ain’t Evil’, but I dunno how to post it. And I’m lazy.

Ok I'm still in love with this song... I sent this out via email to all the other Sandwich Club members a couple of weeks ago (yes that was the old times - SClub has evolved from email to blogging) but I want the rest of the world to know this song. It's called "I used to be an engineer" by a San Francisco outfit, The Ebb and Flow. Going on the strength of that track I actually went out and purchased one of their LPs and an EP off iTunes, both excellent and worth it - despite feeding that greedy mob over at the Apple corporation.

South Park returns today for Season 10 (fuck I feel old!)... Great though. It's one of my favourite times of the year. Since I don't subscribe to the porn channel, this is probably the only show on TV that I have any time for these days. Matt Stone and Trey Parker really don't respect anyone. Remember Chef who's played by Isaac Hayes? Well Isaac's a Scientologist and last year in an episode titled "Trapped In The Closest" they took a big stab at his religion which led to him leaving the show. No hard feelings there, he left on a good note. Come season 10, Matt and Trey are having a go at Isaac. Titled "The Return of Chef", Chef is brainwashed by a "fruity little club" whose members travel around the world having sex with children. A long time ago we used to be friends... la da da da daa.

One last thing before I go. I wanted to mention this band I saw last Saturday night at Starfuckers called Pinky Tuscadero. Crazy sound... I guess it's called Boom, Crash, Pop or something - the names of all these music styles are getting so out of hand. I think many would be divided on whether they like these guys but I'm on the two thumbs up side of the fence. You can hear a few songs from their myspace site. I don't think they do them justice though. Live they were awesome. Reminded me of the B52's - a lot of good chemistry between the male lead singer/ keyboard player and the female lead. I still stress that people will be divided... my flat mate scrounged up his face in distaste the entire gig.

Geez... Pete Doherty is a complete fuck up.
Just another rock 'n roller fading out to oblivion. Check out this news link describing an interview with Pete by Mark Binelli of Rolling Stone magazine. In short...
"Doherty kicked off the Q&A by snorting some heroin... Over the next three hours, Doherty will also smoke crack, shoot heroin and take an 'ecstasy' pill. He offers me heroin and ecstasy but not crack. I decline...The more drugs Doherty does, the more he seems to relax. He never becomes incoherent, though occasionally he seems confused."
Oh Pete, why did you leave The Libertines, why?

This song is sooo coool! Just found this having a brief browse over myspace. Megatron by this Brisbane band called Asteroids. Right out of Transformers, this appeals to the child within. Well worth the download just to hear Optimus Prime giving Megatron a serving...
"No more Optimus Prime grant me mercy I beg of you!"
"You who are with out mercy now plead for it? I thought you were made of sterner stuff!"
SNAP! Brilliant drama...
I love the quote on their site too...
Welcome friend, to the hardest rocking substance known to man: ASTEROIDS.

This is my first blog so you'd think I'd have something witty and hillarious to say but alas! No I don't. Anyway just come back from a long lunch at Golden Century down in China Town (it's becoming a regular event... almost too regular for a man with addictive tendencies) and got this in my inbox... thought it was funny and worthy of a post. It's Chuck Norris reading out facts about himself. Check it out here.

Also some new aussie music you must have. These are 2 tracks off the latest demo from a big up and comer Sydney band, Vespers. Take the Blame and He Said She Said. Loves it...

Vespers: Named after a moped

Oh and a rumour about Anthony (The Man) Mundine:
There are rumours that Anthony Mundine's performance at his recent world title fight was drug assisted, apparently "The Man" did not provide a urine sample after the fight.
It has also been revealed that he has in fact never provided a urine sample during his entire sporting career (NRL or BOXING)

A spokesman for Mundine has stated that the boxer is protected by Commonwealth and International law, which makes it illegal to take the piss.

Hmm, man and robot love ? - Interesting future ahead of us
