Pinky Tuscadero

Pinky Tuscadero

Pinky Tus•kahh•dare•oh! Is what ran over my tongue and through my lips as I wrote this. Say it to yourself a few times, go on and watch or listen to what happens. Unknowingly you start to pronounce the phrase, not just speak it. Attitude, flare and a certain amount of cool start to ooze from it. Pinky Tus•kahh•dare•oh! Why does this happen? Well, in need of some answers, I hit the net (mmhoi) searching for the phrase that sounded like some ‘has been’ actor’s stage name.

“The result” I hear you ask:
On "Happy Days," Roz Kelly played ‘Pinky Tuscadero’, Fonzie's biker girlfriend. “On less happy days, you might not want to see her in action again” police say.
Ms. Kelly has been jailed since Nov. 29 last year, when she allegedly grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun and shot up her neighbour's car and apartment after being awakened by a blaring car alarm. Sounds out of contol huh? Well, looking back, if that scene was part of a movie these guys would have to be on the soundtrack…. Why?

Making my way down to Sandwich Club’s domestic lurk, Candys Apartment, last Friday night, my fellow bloggers and I witnessed one ‘outta’ control, but extremely tasty, sandwich. Pinky Tuscadero. Try to imagine being drawn directly to the front of a room by a stage musical with punk rock A.D.D (yes it is a diagnosable condition) . Instantly we were amazed as their frontwoman howled, poured and projected her show stopping voice into our ears with enough 'cool' to snap freeze Fonzie’s cucumber. A constant theatrical presence was maintained by Pinky Tuscadero’s troupe as they lit up the stage with a boom crash punk score and antics to match. At the end of the set, I needed a cigarette, and I don’t even smoke. All I can say is anyone gotta light?

You Am I

It’s belated, but… yeah. You Am I released a new album. A month ago.
I got to thinking what an atrocity it was that they never really got overseas. I got to thinking how Johnny Depp modeled himself on Keith Richards who modeled himself on Tim Rodgers to get in character for his role in Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Tim Rodgers. God Damn. He would have drunk all the rum from the Bahamas to Barbados and beaten the shit out of any peg-legged parrot-wearing bastard that looked his way.

I can safely assume most ‘stralyans will have these songs, so for our foreign friends:

Purple Sneakers

Heavy Heart

Mr. Milk

Berlin Chair

Please Don’t Ask Me To Smile

It’s no surprise that they’ve been the butter on Aussie sandwiches for the last 12 or so years.
Listening to the lyrics today I’ve realized something. Tim Rodgers may be the most undomesticated and excessive front man in Aussie Rock since Stevie Wright, but living deep inside him is a little boy that just wants to be loved. And living deep inside that little boy… Is another fuckin pirate!

Click ZIS LINK to stream some NEW ALBUM straight into ya brain.
Buy it here

buy their 2 best old albums here: Hi Fi Way and Hourly Daily
The pic came from a humanoid called daniel

And, cause I don’t want to give Tom the computer, here’s something else. From some gringo called Matt Costa (US).
It’s called ‘Whiskey and Wine’, but for some reason it makes me want to drink vodka and beer. And it takes me to a memory that time has warped, where Boris Yeltzin is wasted at a UN summit and doing his patented polka-bear dance.
Wearing lipstick and a garter belt.

Danny Delegato

People say procrastination is fruitless - I disagree. I happen to find the most delightful things. Like just an hour ago I saw my first whale for the year. No no, not Roseanne Arnold, a real whale. I've been worried about the Japs harpooning them all into sushi and whale burgers - nobody should eat whales, we should use them for soap.
I also decided to have a little peak into Danny Delegato's old band Vatara and found a few free downloads on the net. For those of you who don't know who he is, get to know his name because Danny and his new band, D&K, will be touring Australia this time next year - I think we'll lap him up. Here are the Vatara tracks I was talking about (from KBCrecords.com)

Vatara - No Name
Vatara - This Town
Vatara - Sometimes
Vatara - Another Night
Vatara - Flying Into Space

From the album That Feeling. Buy here

Bright Red

Ohtaay... Pop quiz: Where is the coolest place to be in Sydney on Thursday night?
Answer: In Katoomba of course - yeah it's damn cold.
Thank god I'm going to be far away from there celebrating the finish of my uni degree at the Sandwich Club's very own night at Candy's. I can't tell you how excited I am - it's like those sleepless nights I used to have when I was a little boy wondering what Santa was going to bring me for Christmas. Then as every year went on my excitement began to turn to disappointment and then to anger and finally rage. Don't listen to your parents kids, Santa is a C U N T.. (where the hell is my tonka truck!).

Anyway, the Sandwich Club has a few pressies in store for you if you come this Thursday. And because I hate surprises (reason? see above), I'm going to let you know what they are.
Up first, Bright Red - A Sydney 4 piece on the verge of great things. Three cute girls and a guy churning out indie rock tracks with Interpol type guitar hooks and vocals reminescent of The Bangles. I'm really looking forward to seeing these guys - they have the muse and the looks. Check out a couple of tracks on their mySpace.

Next up, Tic Toc Tokyo from Melbourne. I am a massive fan and was stoked when Fauce, the SClub event manager, lined them up for our gig. Similar to Maximo Park, these guys pull out danceable indie tracks - perfect for a night that will end up dominated by the dance floor. Make sure you all tune into FBi on Wednesday night by the way, they're getting interviewed. Here are a couple of tracks from them.

Tic Toc Tokyo - Action Time
Tic Toc Tokyo - Point of Correspondence

Our headliner, The Camels. Need I say more? (Laziness is creeping in again). Ok ok - their live performance is hailed as one of the best in the country. Toe-tapping rock anthems with heavy basslines. Their performance is of the kind where you're happy to continue watching the gig while your beer is empty - only to rush to the bar with everyone else at the close of their final song 'Puppydog'. Here's a couple of tracks including a live version of Puppydog so you can see what to expect.

The Camels - Puppydog (Live)
The Camels - All You Ever Needed

Our DJ's for the night - Bad Teeth DJs. Up and comers on the DJ circuit spinning indie electro pop tracks to finish the night. These guys are going to be big I tells ya. Packing out bars wherever they go (I'm not exaggerating!).

And in a world first, well a first for Candy's Apartment, there will be two stages on show. Yes, the backroom will be opened up where Ace Squad will play in between sets. Admittedly I have not seen these guys play but I'm sitting here listening to them right this second and I like what I hear. Good solid poppy rock - they'll be perfect to compliment the night. I might just note here also, the band features Elliot Crane who's the brother of everyone's favourite bass guitarist, Garth Crane of Frangipani fame aka Fauce from SClub.

Ace Squad - Welcome To The Party
Ace Squad - Harry Dug A Hole

Ok gig preview.... done.

Sydney band Vespers have been busy recording with producer Scott Horscroft (Sleepy Jackson, Presets). I was lucky enough to get a few of their polished tracks in the mail the other day (thanks Jim). Have a listen to the old and new versions of Lucky Punks for comparison...

Vespers - Lucky Punks (new)
Vespers - Lucky Punks (old)
Excellent hey? How's the new outro?
And one more...

Vespers - Take The Blame (new)
Can't wait for that LP fellas...

Starlight Mints - Drowaton: Reminds me of Bowie and Stephen Malkmus. It's sitting up there next to Islands - Return To The Sea as my favourite album of 2006.
Smoosh - She Like Electic: A 12 and a 10 year old girl playing indie pop. Released some time back but the group is just beginning to get noticed. Currently on tour with the Eels. This band will either piss me off in a few months or I'll still be listening to it... could go either way really. For now, I love it.
Some mp3s:

Starlight Mints - The Bee
Starlight Mints - Rhino Stomp
Smoosh - La Pump
Smoosh -Rad

Ho-kay, my lovelies. Welcome to the part of the show where the token female introduces her royal self. (As shown in the picture - that's me with Bill Haley. Many scholars of popular music pinpoint that moment as the birth of the so-called "groupie".)

Hello, my names are
Cait and Her Majesty respectively, and we will alternate arbitrarily between alter egos as we see fit until the joke wears thin enough to date Pete Doherty....aaand that's our quota of what-a-waster quips for the year. Moving on.

As I (like my probably not-so-distant relation the Baron, among others) am currently facing a menacing few days of solid examinating, I shall be lulling you into a false sense of security by making this a relatively short post. (I plan to ambush you with the full extent of my mad rambling skills at a later date. You won't know when. You will, obviously, know where, but not when.) Right now, I shall merely provide you with a few tops Aussie mp3s that, between the titles and the sounds, ought to give you a taste of what I'm about.

/end self-rant (for now...)

The Grates - Lies Are Much More Fun (than telling your lecturers the real, alcohol-related reason your essays are two weeks late.)
The Sleepy Jackson - Miniskirt (and in winter, I can wear one with tights so children don't run screaming from the disturbing pallor of my stems!)
The Devastations - Sex & Mayhem (subtle, eh? In an unrelated matter, who's buying my drinks on Thursday night?)

I look forward to the abusive comments, the flying-undergarment-related injuries, the shameless self-promotion, the cigarette burns, the heartless exploitation of innocent young bassists, and all the accompanying blatant randomness.

Apologies for linking mp3s. I'm still finding my way around the clubhouse, so I have to make my sandwiches cavewoman style. (Roast mammoth with primordial sludge pesto, toasted on one of them fancy new 'fires'.)

The Harry Potters

I once thought you had to at least be a half decent 'musician' to sell any records. But after listening to HARRY AND THE POTTERS, I'm convinced that you just have to take the right angle. Oh my God, this music is excruciating, yet one song on their myspace has been downloaded 402,814 times by excited little wannabe wizards! And looks like their live show is booked out til 2068. So wrong! yet so damn clever!!!
Maybe I could start a band called Lord of The Ring and write songs about Sam and Frodo and the special bond they share...

Group Seizure

“Right that’s it! I’ve got Cabin fever” I said to myself, clutching my head. Little wonder, I had been stuck in the house for the past 2 days and basically hadn’t left the computer for that whole time (I work from home you see). “F*#k it! I'm going for a ride or something, this is killing me!” I proclaimed, hands aloft and room mate cowering...

Later:
Right,
Bike: CHECK!
Tyres pumped up: CHECK!
Helmet: NAH (you stoopid idiot!)
80’s style half finger gloves: HELLS YEAH!
iPod: CHECK!
Tunes that match the headless chicken mood you’re in... hmmmmmmmmm...click.

Blasting down the street last night I felt like I was 10 years old, desperately fleeing my ass off from some corner store owner whom I had just stolen a bounty of red frogs, wizz fizz, and warheads from (candy for our O.S readers). My heart was pumping and my little legs going like a scalded cat on acid. Whoa! Part of the reason for this uncalled for and obscure dive into lack of self control was the band I was listening to, Group Seizure, a band from Melbourne that captured my attention whilst following a labyrinth of Aussie band’s friend lists on the space we all know and love.

With the stark halo reflections of the streetlights coming off the road and a little obstacle called oncoming traffic, I found it hard to navigate pot-holes and judge corners. For some reason I didn’t want to stop. This chaos blurred into the fast paced disco drugged drum beats (ha! say that 3 times fast!) and squalls of guitar distortions which kept my head on a bender. Skidding around into my unit block’s driveway, the last big slam of Group Seizure's sounds left my headphones and hit my ears. It felt like I was in a movie, corner store owner left gasping and my heavy hit of sugar in my clutches. Cool.

I instantly felt drained. Yet satisfied.

Cabin fever? Take a listen to these guys and call me in the morning.

Xavier Rudd

So I escaped the office to the internet cafe. A shitty rainy day in Sydney agrees with the chagrin my shitty job has left me with. And listening to Xavier Rudd reminds me my job is even shittier, but my prospects are still good. He reminds you that life is for living, not working. People often tell me I’m a black guy trapped in a white guy’s skin. That is a blatant lie. I’m probably the most awkwardly white guy around, girls in nightclubs scatter the dance floor when the ‘toe-breaker’ arrives. So for the past few months I’ve been getting deep down and dirty in the comfort and safety of my bedroom to Steve Spacek. This guy is too smooth, he’s been touted as the best thing since sliced bread plus he gets a hand from some heavy hitters like J-Dilla which can’t hurt.

This soulful sandwich is for the skinny, pasty white kids with no sense of rhythm who just want to get down like the fat guy from that totally shitty yet oddly compelling movie, Hitch. Stay tuned next week for Will Smith downloads…

Ok only a quick one tonight because someone had something already written out and is a bit of a retard and left their laptop at someone's mother's house.. eediot.
This Friday night is the launch of The Paper Scissors debut EP at Candy's Apartment. With Pinky Tuscadero in support, it promises to be an awesome night and I suggest you get your arses down there to make the most of it. Both these bands have been growing in immense popularity of late and well deserved I say. These bands are so unique which is a fresh slap in the face with a scene that may be trying a little to hard to be like the brit indie pop that was 'like soooo 2005' (in your best Clueless voice). And because I (a) really want to go to bed and (b) would really struggle to even try and describe the sound of either of these bands I'm posting a couple of The Paper Scissors tracks and a link to Pinky's myspace site where you can listen for yourselves (so sorry for the lack of effort in this post btw). Also, I'm planning on posting an interview and a review of The Paper Scissors new EP in the next couple of weeks anyway.

Pinky Tusdadero MySpace

The Paper Scissors - We Don't Walk
The Paper Scissors - Alright OK

And before I go. Kudos to Meg and Boundary Sounds. Last Saturday should have silenced all Rebel Rebel's critics with Louis XIV and Red Riders taking stage. That was one of the best gigs I've been to in some time. Opening with Red Riders, the crowd was exposed to a number of new tracks that are almost certainly going to be on their upcoming debut LP. Somewhat different to their older stuff I felt there was more of a disco-feel to them more as a result of the drummer rather than the strings. Both old and new, they raced through their music like dogs on heat, the crowd appreciative as they jived and sang along with them. And although I just mentioned that I was kind of over all that Brit/pop genre, I lied - I give these guys anytime of day.

After a long break between sets Louis XIV made the stage. I found them to be a little passive to what I was expecting (although I had expectations of some kind of wild sex orgy - funny that one of the people I bought along was my sister). Anyway, I loved it. It is clear that these guys have a number of influences; beautiful rock anthems with riffs borrowed off AC/DC to Dylanesque acoustic numbers such as 'Ball of Twine' which I thought was the highlight of the night. Most of their playlist was off 'The Best Little Secrets Are Kept' but that was fine by me... it was one of my favourite albums of last year.
Here are a few tracks from both Louis XIV and Red Riders...

Louis XIV - Ball of Twine
Louis XIV - Louis XIV
Red Riders - Forget Easy
Red Riders- Call On Me

Brian Campeau

BRIAN CAMPEAU is to a guitar what a Thai stripper is to a ping pong ball, both utilising their 'instruments' in the most unconventional ways. It's impossible to divert your attention from the performance on stage, fascinated by an act you never thought humanly possible. One might be forgiven for thinking Brian has confused his guitar with a piano, or a typewriter, or a cheese grater, or maybe a Thai stripper. But you won't hear anyone correcting him. His style lends itself to an intriguing, unconventional sound that turns your average song upside down and around into a masterpiece.

He's like a one man supergroup. Throughout his live show we see glimpses of Zach Rogue's hopeful orchestral pop, strokes of Jose Gonzales' delicacy, shards of Thom York's solemn genius, and flashes of Ben Folds' musicianship, thrown in with servings of jazz, folk, acappella, African Himbo Humbo and fuck knows what else.

But you can't pigeon-hole this man. His dabbling in various genres acts as a statement that says "see, I can do all that, so get off my back and let me play whatever the fuck I want". So he does. And people can't help but listen. We see so many bands these days desperate to try something new, only to end up reverting back to the sound of either a wet fart, or a band from 30 years ago. Brian however, is a musician forging his own eclectic brand of music, in his own unique style. And he's pulling it off.

A message to all aspiring guitarists/singers: if you are the dour 'glass half empty' type, then Brian's performance may reveal that mystical peak of unattainabilty, confronting you with the realisation that your own music is a mere drop, like any other, in a very big ocean. You'll go home, strum your guitar, then smash it over your housemates head, frustrated with the likes of Brian Campeau for raising the bar way too fucking high to ever come close.
But for the more shrewd who prefer to see the glass half full, then Brian's music will encourage you to assess the aesthetic potential of everyday sounds. It will offer hope that there is still music out there yet to be discovered, and it will give you the confidence to explore and push those boundaries.

Im guessing Brian has had his fair share of people telling him to write pop music, and Im sure his guitar, voice and song writing abilities could have made him alot of money doing so. But that's not why he's a musician. He realises that satisfaction accounts for so much more than money and fame. And you can tell Brian is a satisfied musician, doing exactly what he loves. And that's why his reach extends beyond the musically minded, inspiring us all to use our talents exactly how we want to, how we feel we should, rather than how other people tell us we should. And THAT will give us the best chance of attaining true satisfaction.

In a little over 2 weeks I’ll be leaving behind this cold, cold place and arriving in the warm land of the Canucks (well warm at the moment – just forget there’s snow for half the year). Yes I’m off to Canada for a couple of weeks where I’m going to hang out with beavers and French people in the sun. Speaking of Canadians, Buck 65 the hip-hop/rock extraordinaire will be visiting Sydney town on a short tour of Australia. And guess who’s going to be away? Yeah I’m kind of disappointed about that. Well the Buck is playing at Newtown on the 6th of July and I suggest you go see him... he’s the shizz or the merzz depending on whether you're in British Canada or French Canada (you know, in English gangster language for shit is pronounced shizz so in French, where they say merde!, it’s merzz!). Look it works for me.
Here’s a couple of tracks

Buck 65 – Wicked & Weird (from This Right Here Is Buck 65, Purchase here)
Buck 65 – Devils Eyes (from Secret House Against The World, Purchase here)

And so in the spirit of Marc’s woman posting, here’s two MSTRKRFT versions of Buck 65’s song Kennedy Killed The Hat. Available off iTunes as well as a number of other MSTRKRFT tracks.

I heard The Grates new single today. I can't believe those guys are recording again, they've only just released their debut LP and they're on tour. How the heck do they find time to record a new single?
Actually, hold on a sec, that's not The Grates, it's ... Metric? Wait... it's neither. It's Be Your Own Pet. Oh man I'm in love. My two favourite girl bands had some kind of lesbian relationship and gave birth to Be Your Own Pet (ok ok, they're not completely girl bands because there are guys but their lead vox are girls). Anyway have a listen to a couple of tracks from their debut self-titled LP (purchase here).

Be Your Own Pet - Adventure
Be Your Own Pet - Girls On TV

And just to show you the similarities, here's one from The Grates and one from Metric

The Grates - Start Again
Metric - Live It Out
(Off Live It Out, purchase here)

See what I mean?

Oh by the way... loved these guys at SXIW last Sunday. The City Lights from Sydney. Here are a couple of tracks available to download off their mySpace site. From their debut album, Escape From Tomorrow Today which was Triple J album of the week back in 2004 (purchase from ivyleague here).

The City Lights - You Stand Accused Young Man
The City Lights - No End In Sight

Go see them... they were awesome live.

The Camels
Oh deary deary me. I've been lying in bed all day trying very hard to motivate myself to get up. Watching re-runs of South Park on my laptop with home delivered pizza, why does anyone need to leave the haven that is bed (other than going to the door to pay the pizza man)? Well I'm up now, and for a good reason. I'm about to head off to the South By Inner West Festival at one of Australia's Meccas of music that is the Annandale Hotel. A top lineup, the day and night features the likes of some of Sydney and Melbournes best in the underground scene - Gersey, The Camels (playing at our first night on the 29th), Andy Clockwise, Vespers and The Paper Scissors (playing with us on our second night in July) to name a few. Anyway, I'm putting myself in the mood so I thought I'd share a few tunes with you all.

Gersey - Look To The Sun (off their MySpace site and buy their stuff here)
The Camels - All You Ever Needed (buy their stuff here)
Andy Clockwise - Mr Tastemaker (off his MySpace site and buy his stuff here)

Well my room mate's hearing is rooted. Too many live gigs and not enough ear muffs. Our t.v has a knack of emitting this high pitched beeping (about 100 octaves above Zed's voice in Police Academy 2&3). Seeing as he couldn't hear it and I couldn't handle it, I moved into my room and started hunting around Sandwich Club's favourite deli, the internet, to bring you folks some cool new toons you can scuff up your kitchen floor with. Then I remembered that the other day I befriended "Poly and the Statics" on myspace. It was kinda fitting the mood I was in, considering that our t.v may as well be emitting static, so I ran with it and had a look/listen. Anyways from what I have read these guys are working their musical bones to dust of late, playing a whole series of gigs supporting some of Sandwich Club's favorite outfits such as The Presets, Riff Random, Dappled Cities Fly, Starky, Dead Frenchmen, Wolf&Cub and The Boat People to name a few. This is no wonder as I was impressed by their crazy drum beats and baselines, with a pacey guitar and the ever trusty synthesizer. Put this all together and you get tracks like "Chainsaw" and "Symphony" that I find hard to classify or compare to anything else I have heard, which is gangbusters! (thanks Marc). So just shut up turn the t.v off and dance to this. It's a gooood sandwich.
Also just a quick reminder to all those Sydneysiders craving a night of exposure to some top Aussie musical talent, beverages and peeps, make your way along to Candy's Apartment on Thursday June 29 (get the info to the right) or you could just fricken sign up to our email list and get all the info delivered to your inbox. Ahh… another long weekend. Three days of beer, music and sleep. So what marks the occasion for the public holiday? Well it’s our favourite Queen’s birthday. The funny thing is no one really gives a damn about the Queen this far away from the motherland that is Great Britain (say that in your best pompous voice with your chest out and nose up). It’s not even the Queen’s real birthday anyway, that’s on the 21st of April (good for pub trivia and you can impress your friends with your array of useless facts). I can imagine the discussions they have in Buckingham Palace. “Your Majesty, the Australian’s want to become a republic.” “We can’t have that, give them another public holiday.” “Smashing idea your Majesty – I will put it to little John right away.” “Oh, and Tony, make sure it’s during the middle of winter when it’s cold and wet just to remind those pesky Australians of where they came from.”

Some tunes that have something to do with Queens.

David Bowie - Queen Bitch
The Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen
Babystrange - Jukebox Queen
+/- - The Queen of Detroit (purchase +/- here)
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead (live 26/8/86 - one of my all time favourite bootlegs, available from EarFarm for a short time)
The Subways - Rock and Roll Queen

Once again, these are for sampling only. All are availabe from iTunes unless linked above.
Have a great long weekend...

One of the first bands I ever saw at those dark, dingy cigarette smoke filled rooms we call bars was The Forgotten Army. I remember being drawn into their music. Dark rock with strings. Muse like in sound with a great front man, Nick Jones who is Jeff Buckliesk and an excellent cello player in Annie Macdonald the band had a great sound that no one else in Sydney was doing at the time (and still isn’t). For a long time I considered myself their number 1 fan but just like the day I discovered my first pube and realised my English teacher had breasts, my mind began to wonder and the army was somewhat ‘forgotten’. On a recent trip up to Brisbane (visiting that same cello player I might add) I ran into Nick Jones who informed me that the band had broken up. I was shocked. Not even one last goodbye? I told him about this blog and swore to him I would write a piece about them inmemorium… so here it is. But that’s not all. At the Red Paintings gig last Friday I happened to run into Nick again. ‘What’s that? The bands back together?’ I heard him right and they’re playing at the Hopetoun this Saturday night, albeit missing one beautiful cello player. So if you missed out on a ticket to the Come Together Festival and you’re not seeing The Dears at Home I suggest you welcome back one of Sydney’s best live bands in The Forgotten Army (details on the toolbar to the right – and while you’re at it, sign up to our damn Sandwich Club night @ Candy’s.. I dare you).
Here are a couple of tracks from the one and only EP released some years back. I must note, they don’t do them as much justice as they deserve… see them live for the complete experience of the army.

The Forgotten Army – Cityscape
The Forgotten Army – The Forgotten Army

Add them as a friend on MySpace

But that’s not all the tasty sandwiches for you today.
Jai Pyne from Sydney band The Paper Scissors has been busy working on a side project titled Pork Pies. I really like what I hear but he tells me it’s far from finished and he’s not sure when he’ll get around to it. He’s busy working on The Paper Scissors upcoming debut EP set for release on the 23rd of June down at Candy’s Apartment (details on the toolbar). Really looking forward to both.
Here’s a couple I nabbed off the Pork Pies MySpace site.

Pork Pies – Shivers & Tingles
Pork Pies – Whenemies

And here’s one of my favourite tracks from his other band The Paper Scissors…

The Paper Scissors – We Don’t Walk

Also look out in the next couple of weeks for an SClub interview with Jai and The Paper Scissors and a review of their forthcoming release.

Still hungry?
One of our Sandwich Club followers asked us to check out these guys. San Francisco soul/funk rockers Chow Nasty.. great stuff (thanks Johnny Idaho).

Chow Nasty – Hey Hot Tomato
Chow Nasty – Ungawa

Become their friend on MySpace

And in the spirit of Franz, Glasgow rockers The Flykicks single, Do You Like Disco?

The Flykicks – Do You Like Disco?

Phew… I should really do some study

Sould On Board

Remember having those childish superhero inspired conversations with your best mate in the sand pit when you were a kid (or fully fledged adult if you are like Brodie in the movie ‘Mallrats’)? It went something like this: “If I could have a superhero’s powers, I would have the agro of Wolverine, the anonymity of the Invisible Man, The heat of Flameboy, The uh battiness of Batman and the strength of The Hulk etc”. Well I think that up and coming band members do exactly the same thing only this is how their convo flows: “I want the resounding voice of Jimi Goodwin (Doves), The psychedelic rhythm section of the Pixies and the moodiness of the Cure” Well at least that’s what I think Mark Campbell, Brent Lockwood and Anthony Petrucci did before they formed SOULS ON BOARD in 2004. Their whole EP is a combo journey in itself. “Apple Grapple” is a short intro to whats about to overpower you. It lulls you into a false sense of security…… raindrops, winter, open fire and mist all fall into your mind before you want to start jiving and spinning tribal style whilst injesting some of Barney Gumble’s “pixie juice” to the track “How to Make A Fire”. Once you collapse in a heap and the condensation is dripping of the windows, like after a good session in the sack in the height of a Sydney winter, you fall onto your back, hands above your head and enjoy the dreamlike state that “Hand” puts you in. Marvellous I say. As a group S.O.B have a glutton of potential. This E.P is definately needed if you want to put a positive spin on a bitterly cold winter like the one we are having in Sydney. Here are three sample tracks from the E.P. If you like it as much as I did,

The Red Paintings

The Red Paintings @Bar Broadway, Sydney 6 june
I'm tempted to describe this band as an "acquired taste", but I might get arrested for impersonating a music journo, (or a schizophrenic food critic). So I'll just say The Red Paintings, from Brisbane, do take a little time to digest, and one may be forgiven for thinking they were from a country, or planet, that we never knew existed.
Their music is different, but fascinating all the same. Donning heavy make-up, Kimonos, wigs, robot appendages, and blasting out a feast of guitar, violin, cello, bass & drums, The Red Paintings can be hard to take in all at once.
They slowly drag you away from the bar, lure you in, and slam the door behind you. Their haunting lyrics and arrangements play games with your head until Stockholm Syndrome finally creeps in. I couldnt blink, let alone tap my feet. By the encore I was totally fucking mesmerised. These guys could have told me to have sex with the cigarette machine, and i would have, transformed out of all recognition.
And then a glorius chorus (i think it was a chorus?) springs out of nowhere, opens the curtains and lets the light pour in! That split second at a live show where you become so overwhelmed with inspiration you wouldnt wish for anything else in the world, totally consumed in the moment.
After an epic outro had finished dangling me around like a puppet, I eventually took control of my own legs, and walked outside with the highest regard for The Red Paintings. One of those spooky experiences when you can't quite figure out what just happened to you, and why you can't stop smiling. I checked my body for strange marks and felt for any signs of probing, then looked up at the stars wondering who or what put me here.
It may take a good listen, but I highly recommend you sit in a dark corner, and let The Red Paintings take control for a while.

If my Toshiba laptop was alive it would be a some kind of slow, incomprehensible senile retard. It's really on its last legs... someone (me) should have sent it to a computer retirement home long ago where it could hang out with the likes of old Dr Atari 2600 and Sir Commodore 64 esq. However, because I'm poor it won't get that great fortune. Instead it's going to keep on running until its hard drive or CPU explodes (the eqivalent of a stroke really). But DAT Politics's Toshiba must be like a kid who's had way too much green cordial at their friend's birthday party. They wrote a song about their Toshiba and everytime I listen to it I feel like drinking 10 red bulls and busting out into some crazy aerobics until I spontaneously combust. It's frickin' wacky. In fact their entire new record, Wow Twist, is wacky. For me, its been filling the void that was left after Clor broke up (sniff...electro pop will never be the same).
Have a listen... I hope it helps you through these hard times.

DAT Politics - My Toshiba Is Alive
DAT Politics - Turn My Brain Off

Marc, you've got me completely obsessed with the muppets again after your blog the other day (see here). So I managed to track down the video of 'Can You Picture That'... I know everyone says this but Jim Henson was on some serious acid when he made the muppets and our parents pretty much made us watch it all. I don't blame them... who could be bothered to teach their kids anything when the TV can do it all for you? I know I learnt my ABC's off Big Bird and co. I still pronounce the letter 'Z' as 'zee' rather than the proper Australian (English you mean?) 'zed'. Zee sounds cooler anyway.

Here's the film clip for 'Can You Picture That' off the Muppet movie...
Also does anyone remember Kermit's song at the start of that movie... 'Rainbow Connection'
Here it is... great Banjo work here by the way.

Kermit The Frog - Rainbow Connection

Ahh MySpace... The key to my procrastination. An addiction perhaps?
The last week has uncovered a few surprises in the MySpace world... some nice tunes to listen to while the time goes by. Here is a little wrap up of some music I've enjoyed in the last week.

Here's a nice song by Melbourne band Mid-State Orange (I'm sure I've heard it before). It almost sounds like Burt Bacharach wrote this song. Making me dream of summer..... (it's 8 degrees outside) By the way... if you're going to rush over this post, please grab this song.. it's worth it

Mid-State Orange - Summer In Disguise

From up and coming funk band The Looks (Newcastle, AUS). An early Red Hot Chili Peppers sounding track...

The Looks - Spanish Fly

Some nice tracks from The Minders (currently on tour with one of my favourite bands, Of Montreal).

The Minders - Don't You Stop
The Minders - Hooray For Tuesday

Yet another Melbourne band! This War... To tell you the truth, I'm not a huge fan of punk but this is pretty good. The first song reminds me of The Cribs.

This War - Atomic Bombs
This War - The West

Have a nice weekend all...

I don't think me and iPods get along. Actually to be more precise, me and iPod photos don't get along (I had the one before it - had no problems whatsoever). I've now been sent out my 4th frickin iPod photo on warranty, the others keep breaking showing this gay arse frown face. Who wants a fancy colour screen anyway? The screen's not even big enough to view photos (ok an ipod video would be cool I guess). Anyway since I didn't have much time to load music on the thing the other day I just decided to select my top 2000 songs and load them on. Well I've been hit with all sorts of different tunes that were almost erased from memory. One of them included the Louis XIV track 'Finding Out True Love Is Blind' from The Best Little Secrets Are Kept LP. That jogged a few memories... I loved that album (I hear a few SClub members hissing behind my back). It was so simple... lets form a band, play some catchy music and sing about pure sex - works for me. And so it happens that Louis XIV will be in town in a couple of weeks - playing at Rebel Rebel on the 17th of June (buy tickets here by the way). And after having a good listen to that album today I am definitley in. Add to that, two stellar support acts; The Mares and one of my local favourites, Red Riders. Should be a damn good night.

Louis XIV - Finding Out True Love Is Blind (Acoustic from their website)
Louis XIV - Paper Doll (From The Best Little Secrets Are Kept. Purchase here.)

From The Plan A EP (Purchase here)

Red Riders - I Think You're Blind

Also one for the rumour mills. Apparently the Red Riders are in the process of recording their debut LP.
