The Black Arts
Brisbane, AustraliaSo once again I'm indebted to MySpace Tom. I think I'm up to about 8 sexual favours now. My latest obligations are thanks to 5 piece Brissy band The Black Arts.
Combine grainy drunken vocals with some tinkling piano loops, bashed out acoustic strings, boozy harmonies, frenetic riffage and a spattering of slide guitar, and you have a sound that everyone can love. Sure, they may not be trying to re-invent the wheel (yet), but at their core is an ability to write great songs. And this (despite what people at certain magazines and websites will tell you), is far more important than experimenting with endangered bird-life in the hope of discovering new samples.
Personally, I'd need masking tape and a staple gun to stop myself singing along to these little numbers. They have an EP coming out in October and word is they'll be heading south of the border to Syd and Melb to perform some of their mojo. Im looking forward to it like I look forward to my morning coffee, or my afternoon beer, or my evening... ummm... never mind.
So nab these tunes then head to their MySpace for a couple more, and come out with your hands up..

Sounds a bit like Bernard. I'm sick of him, but not these guys. I like it a lot

haha.. Bernard bernard.
I give it to him though. Powderfinger have had their time - it's good he's trying something else now and not hanging on like so many other artists do

You can't hate someone for trying that

if someone tries something new and it sux, than we tend to turn on them, AND their previous work, no matter how good it was. Sad but its true. But then one day they return to what they do best, and totally win me over once again (eg gerling & the love/hate relationship i have with them).
Aside from all this waffle. The Black Arts are GOOD! They could easily be from Austin with that sound, if I didnt know any better.
