Remember having those childish superhero inspired conversations with your best mate in the sand pit when you were a kid (or fully fledged adult if you are like Brodie in the movie ‘Mallrats’)? It went something like this: “If I could have a superhero’s powers, I would have the agro of Wolverine, the anonymity of the Invisible Man, The heat of Flameboy, The uh battiness of Batman and the strength of The Hulk etc”. Well I think that up and coming band members do exactly the same thing only this is how their convo flows: “I want the resounding voice of Jimi Goodwin (Doves), The psychedelic rhythm section of the Pixies and the moodiness of the Cure” Well at least that’s what I think Mark Campbell, Brent Lockwood and Anthony Petrucci did before they formed SOULS ON BOARD in 2004. Their whole EP is a combo journey in itself. “Apple Grapple” is a short intro to whats about to overpower you. It lulls you into a false sense of security…… raindrops, winter, open fire and mist all fall into your mind before you want to start jiving and spinning tribal style whilst injesting some of Barney Gumble’s “pixie juice” to the track “How to Make A Fire”. Once you collapse in a heap and the condensation is dripping of the windows, like after a good session in the sack in the height of a Sydney winter, you fall onto your back, hands above your head and enjoy the dreamlike state that “Hand” puts you in. Marvellous I say. As a group S.O.B have a glutton of potential. This E.P is definately needed if you want to put a positive spin on a bitterly cold winter like the one we are having in Sydney. Here are three sample tracks from the E.P. If you like it as much as I did,
