The Drones - Gala Mill & New Sufjan
For his own amusement, God invented bands like The Drones so that people on this Earth would be divided and in conflict. I like playing The Drones just to get a reaction... you either hate it or you love it. I am of the latter party.
I picked up their latest LP, Gala Mill some weeks back and its been on high rotation on the stereo ever since. For some reason Gareth Liddiard wailing raw voice is soothing... I rarely understand what he says, surely it's lyrical genius but I'll never know. Like a man possessed, I just scream along in various tongues...
Gala Mill is softer than its critically acclaimed predecessor Wait Long By The River & The Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By but retains the song writing genius that is a hallmark of the group's music. Many aspects of this latest work are stronger so it will be interesting to see how the critics pick this one up (Pitchfork gave Wait Long By The River an 8.3 back in 2005 - yes at least they got that one right).
The Drones are currently on tour around Australia... I happened to miss them on Saturday at the Gaelic because my girlfriend hates them - SEE, causing conflict!
Detroit, United States
I was just browsing through You Aint No Picasso and saw that the prolific songwriter Sufjan Stevens is at it again. I struggle to keep up with this man. I've only just got a firm grip on Avalanche which is a collection of B-Sides from Illinoise... and now this! Titled Majesty, Snowbird and performed live at Austin City Limits - this is rumoured to be off his next album... apparently it will be centered around birds.
This is really incredible...

Haha thanks Sean... It would have been a magical night.
I know Cait.. the man confuses me greatly. Maybe there's a state famous for birds!?

And lest we forget, his other bird-related recent track "The Lord God Bird" was "a song about the ivory-billed woodpecker rediscovered in Arkansas – in connection with a National Public Radio piece in which 'independent radio producers Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister were curious about how Stevens writes his songs'. So sayeth Wikipedia. I'm thinking the next album may well be called "The Birdman of Arkansas"...
how bout seven swans...? love that track.
