Dead Letter Chorus
Sydney, Australia
I rarely get to see enough local folk music these days. I don't think it's because the Sydney scene is lacking in that form of music, I think it's more to do with the glitzy throw it in your face style of marketing being attributed to the faster forms of music such as the emerging electro pop (nu-rave?) or traditional indie old school rock. Obviously the marketing works - I find myself there all the time. Folk rock on the other hand gets neglected by me as far as live gigs go... this is strange because at least a quarter of the stuff I listen to is folk. Maybe I should make it a new years resolution to go out and see more (these new laws being passed in NSW may help - now restaurants and bars will be allowed to have 'unplugged' bands playing in the corner).
One such band that is a new years resolution to see is Dead Letter Chorus. An incredible little band that started off as a side project for Days Like Stars and Midnight Swim members which has recently grown with the addition of a beautiful female vocalist in Gabrielle Huber. Their music is special to say the least. Haunting and captivating, just close your eyes and it will wisk you away from the confines of the little room you're sitting in. There are hints of Dylan, Neil Young and even the slower country style of the Stones occasionally. Have a listen to a couple of these live tracks from the band. Make sure you listen from start to finish, stop, then take a deep breath and do it all again - special indeed.

john wardle, as in THE 'John Wardle'? mate, you've been an inspiration. on behalf of everyone at SClub, music lovers, musicians, and cafe/pub owners all over NSW... thankyou.
hopefully this will allow NSW to play a bit of catch-up on our southern brothers. places like suite505 have been holding the flag for Sydney, and i really hope that with the new laws there will more oppportunity for musicians and punters alike.
beyond that, it going to be good for the whole Australian music scene. our biggest city shouldnt be a place where live music culture is rejected. especially knowing how strong we are doing overseas with both commercially and critically.
exciting times...

Hi Chuck
hmm - its not just me, there is Richard Ruhle from the Union, as well as the team at Music NSW, and some true believers in the various Ministries - Victoria Owens and Shane McMahon in Arts NSW, Peter Cox at Gaming and Racing, as well as Ministers Bob Debus, Frank Sartor and Grant McBride. Even yesterday there were some serious toing and froing on the writing of the regs - a work in progress, but look, things are definitely going to be much better before long, and a standardised regulation across NSW is a solid foundation stone for a sustainable future for live music in NSW. What a business.
Nice website by the way
happy Christmas

with a complying development checklist inspection instead of the previous dual development application process being available for smaller scale venues such as pubs and restaurants, we very much hope that this will enable much more live music in NSW.
the writing of the regulations is an ongoing process, and only time will tell if it is a sucess , but we are very happy that a difference has been made.
