Song For The Fields

Now here's a new favourite... Fields. A 5-piece from London stitched together by Bloc Party manager Simon White. Oh and I do mean 'stiched'. Just take a look at their backgrounds. There's singer and keyboardist Thorunn Anton who's father was famous for writing the Icelandic national anthem. And bassist Matty Derham who spent years cutting the hair for Bloc Party, Franz and the Rapture. Then there's a not so cool ex-back up singer from Junior Senior - a diverse bunch eh? Think the sounds of the American midwest blended with progressive rock, similar to Broken Social Scene but all the same unique.

The Inches new music video & Dappled Cities Fly preview
Melbourne band The Inches have just released a new music video for the single Somewhere At The Party. Well the clip doesn't really portray a party- at least not an Australian party with the VB, snags, vomit and sheilas. Perhaps that english bitch Germaine Greer would call it a party? - no you're not Australian.
Nevertheless I really like this video and the band for that matter....

Thursday 28th - The Sandwich Makers

Their whole EP is a combo journey in itself. "Apple Grapple" is a short intro to whats about to overpower you. It lulls you into a false sense of security... raindrops, winter, open fire and mist all fall into your mind before you want to start jiving and spinning tribal style whilst injesting some of Barney Gumble's "pixie juice" to the track "How to Make A Fire". Once you collapse in a heap and the condensation is dripping of the windows, like after a good session in the sack in the height of a Sydney winter, you fall onto your back, hands above your head and enjoy the dreamlike state that "Hand" puts you in. Marvellous I say. As a group S.O.B have a glutton of potential.

Lelu, TV and a little white rabbit
And I'm probably going to be the last blogger in the world to write about TV On The Radio but I feel I have to - they're just too damn good. Return To Cookie Mountain has been played over and over again on my stereo this week leaving me feel a tinge of regret for missing them at Splendour - I'm not sure how I did considering all their hype but I suspect it had something to do with that damn white rabbit at Tipi Village - I'll catch you one day you little bastard hare...

ReRun - Whitest Boy Alive

And even though Hollywood will tell you that a taut, tanned body is what gets the ladies' blood pumping these days, all I can say in response is that they haven't been fortunate enough to lay eyes on the unbridled sexiness of my pigmentless and somewhat hairy bum. (The lucky few to hold that prestigious honour include my girlfriend, friends, and a handful of McDonalds drive-thru staff).
Okay I may be a little biased in my opinion on whether or not white boys like me can actually be deemed attractive, but I really do believe it to be the truth. I was even going to post a homemade video of myself to try to convince you of the tastiness of pastiness, but luckily for you I have the opportunity to do it through song, by way of the very appropriately named German band, The Whitest Boy Alive.
The Whitest Boy Alive are lead by jack-of-all-trades and self confessed ginger, Erlend Oye. You may recognise Oye from his kick ass DJ Kicks mix that he did a couple of years ago, or as the front man of Kings Of Convenience. And like I've been saying this whole time, these guys just reek of sexy. If the shuffling of the drums and bouncing basslines don't make your cheeks a little flushed, then Oye's nonchalant but rhythmic vocals sure will. And as each song goes by, you'll be getting more and more into it. Then as the brilliant 'Burning' comes to a climax, suddenly you don't give a fuck about the red wine you just spilt on the new couch. You'll be too busy screaming 'DO ME! DO ME NOW!', to nobody in particular.
The Whitest Boy Alive are a little more poppy sounding than the predominantly acoustic Kings Of Convenience, which is actually right up my alley at the moment. In fact they sound like they're fresh out of the University of European Cheesy Pop-Rock, from which we've seen such esteemed colleagues as Phoenix, Air, and Benny Sings.
So check out a few tracks from their brand spanking new album, 'Dreams' (purchase here). Just make sure there are some hotties in the room, or the power of these sexy white boys will have you making out with your hand.

The Bank Holidays

I hate big financial institutions. They hold all my money. I like my money. It's good for buying beer and hookers. But most of all, I hate them cause they have the power to make their own holidays. That's a privilege that should be reserved for 3rd world despots and Santa. Fucking banks and their holidays....
Apologies for the rant. It's wrong of me to make blanket comments like that, after all there is one bank holiday that makes everyone happy. That's the band The Bank Holidays from Perth. They deal in sunny melodic pop, drenched in harmony with some really cool chord progressions. As such, they cite older influences such as The Beach Boys and The Byrds, and draw comparisons to more contemporary bands such as The Shins.
These tunes will cheer you up no matter what the sitch. So next bank holiday when you're outta cashola and the ATM is broken, just put in your headphones and smile....... at the camera while you rob the servo.

Ruby Love Rocks - I like my filth pretty

As a card-carrying word nerd, I tend to exhibit a little prejudice towards certain specimens, based purely on how they "look", or sound as they roll off the tongue. I love the word "fuck" purely because of the way it feels as it leaves your mouth - complete and potent, like a compact but attitude-laden little car rolling off a production line. (Say it slowly - under your breath if you're in public - or not, whatever - and you'll feel it.) I love "glorious" because it makes me feel like a character in an Oscar Wilde play, and when I'm talking about a particularly mental night out, saying that I had a glorious time sounds infinitely glamorous, and makes me feel like less of a trashbag for the few seconds before I go back to trying to work out where those weird-shaped door stamps came from, and why they're on the back of my leg. Even though I was wearing jeans.
By the same token, when scanning through lists of band names on a computer screen I tend to leap for the prettier or more interesting-sounding monikers, and avoid the ones with less pleasant evocations like The Plague. (I'm in no hurry to hit up their MySpace, I can tell you.) So when I spotted Ruby Love Rocks, I was grabbed by the combination of "pretty red shiny thing" with "dark filthy sweaty insanity" and "love", which I like to think of as a combination of the other two. Their dark-red electro-pop, wrapped up in Kristen's seductively hazy vocals, recall Lamb, Wicked Beat Sound System and Ladytron by turns, and you've gotta love such an unabashedly skankin' cover of a Paul Simon song. I'll say it again: skankin'. Now there's a word to relish...

Summer festivalgoers in the UK went nuts over The Fratellis. These guys rock with a swagger, dance with a tic, harmonise with a snarl, and they'll make the most serious-faced indie-don't-dance cynic swing their hips and join in the handclaps. Beware though - acute catchiness may result in repeatedly growling "gotmanuts fromma hippyan igottemona saturdaynight" under your breath, which makes people look at you funny.

A lunch break with Vespers
How would you describe your music?
Hold your breath for 40 seconds and think of nachos. If rock is your breath it is far more a priority than even delicious distractions.
It would seem that some bands approach their music more like a business, rather than artists. Has there ever been a time when you've felt this happening to yourselves?
Sure - although we decided that selling our bodies was a far too exhausting before gigs. Besides, being a 'starving artist' is a powerful image to help sell shit.
Is it a good time to be playing live music in Australia at the moment?
Absolutely, there are venues with nights specifically catering to rock. However as is our inclination to pursue our art we'd be playing even if rock bands were reviled and targeted by bounty hunters. Even then we're not above offering our bodies as bribes to said bounty hunters.
Who would be in your ultimate band and why?
Hannibal Barca, Scipio Africanus, Alcibiades and Rodney Dangerfield. Even if they all played recorders and kazoos, who gives a shit? They would have wild boar and novelty ties in their rider.
Your most uncool musical indulgence?
Animal from the Muppets. Nuff said.

The Desks

I stumbled across an auction the other day held by the State Rail Authority, throwing out all their old shit (to make room for more old shit, such is the rationale of the public service).
I revelled in the idea of adorning my house with old-school lockers, old maps of rail networks, and big old desks! Oh so many desks!!! But unable to justify my bizarre obsession, I retreated from the manic bidding wars, pondering why the desk appealed so much more than an awkward table, a lazy couch, or a mundane ironing board?
Impelled by a mutual appreciation for our favourite article of furniture, I was naturally drawn toward my answer - Sydney solo artist, The Desks, whose lo-fi homemade pop songs encapsulate all the wonderful things his namesake represents:
The romantic idea of sitting down at a desk, drafting your latest novel or theory on black holes, or something uncharacteristically erudite like that. Or crowding the draws with walt disney figurines, oddly shaped stones, valentines cards, movie ticket stubs, foreign coins, or something simply nostalgic like that.
It's a place where we can happily stay up all night, scribbling down our perspective on life, leisurely correcting our own mistakes.
The desk inspires and facilitates a pursuit of knoweldge and an understanding of the things around us and an appreciation for our own little corner of a very big room.
So rummage through these drawers and see what you find...

Ears ringing - Slightly hungover but satisfied :)
Y&R - Photo c/o Boudist
Just a short quick one today (I'm oh so tired and it's 9:30 on a Friday night). I'm still beaming (albeit tired) over last night, what a gig! So much hype has been around the Young & Restless and I was feeling a little left out because I was yet to see them but yeah, now I can join in. Karina, their frontwoman, left such an impression that I woke up in my sleep having nightmares about her ripping my heart out 'Kali ma, kali ma'. Hang on, change the 'R' to 'L' and the 'N' to 'M' and you have? weird.
Anyway if you're like me and have been in la la land (I go there for holidays) make sure you leave your sheltered special place for a day and come to a Y&R gig. They'll blow your fucking brains out!

The Beautiful Girls are terrorists!
Terrorists?
On the day prior to their first show in the U.S. The Beautiful Girls were stopped by the border guards above Minneapolis, because they failed to deliver the correct paperwork and 2 of the band members (keyboards and drummer) were judged to pose such a threat to homeland security that they were not allowed into the country.
That alone would be a set back but not insurmountable, however the band members in question were banned for a year and faithful t.b.g soldier Matty Woo (tour manager extraordinaire), troubled and threatening insurgent that he is, will not be allowed to enter the US for ten (10) years.
The tour with Mofro will now not be going ahead in any capacity. This is obviously a big problem and not a good scenario for the band and the fans and it's going to disappoint some people - the band is obviously very disappointed - but they will be back. t.b.g. apologize for any inconvenience to anyone who anticipated, or traveled, to see the band on this tour, and thank everyone for their continued support.
Also one for the rumour mill. A friend of a friend of another friend's 3rd cousin in law (thanks DRJ) says The Pixies will be touring Australia late November or early December*.

Hot Little Hands

My Ipod pulled a Lazarus a while back, after spending the better part of a week frowning at me. Whatever supernatural force brought it back, also had the thoughtfulness to add some new music. Notably, Hot Little Hands.
No points for guessing which city these guys (and girl) come from.
Thats right! No points for you! Because you already know. It's written at the top of the blog. Anyway if you didn't see that, all it would take is a quick listen to a few of their songs. That's the point I'm attempting to convey here. Why? Cause the originality and eclecticism is immediately apparent in their music. Makes it a real bitch to describe them though.
They throw in a steady beat, heavy bass, punctuated lead guitar, keys, and improv brass. Not afraid to experiment with sounds but edging more toward sparse than on the side of garish, every instrument meshes seamlessly. Combine that with killer key changes, multi layered harmonies, and vocals which swing between wistful and seductive depending on the tune. Whatever, just listen.
It's nice to see a band not seem like they're trying too hard and in doing so, get it right on the money.

Jack Ladder paints a picture.

All too often we hear a good tune betrayed by trivial and uninspiring lyrics, as lazy artists 'fill the gaps' with scribble that reads like a neurotic soliloqy by a member of the babysitters club.
In contrast, we can appreciate the intricacy of artists like Jack Ladder, whose articulate lyrics are words only temporarily, as they transpose from the song into emotive imagery that transcends well beyond the page of a notebook. Like red wine soaking tobacco, his deep saltry tone percolates your skin, passing through your thoughts with intoxicating efficacy.
Jack refuses to rest on the laurels of his gentle melodies, which he uses more as a vehicle for his stories, saturated with ripened contemplation, much in the vain of artists like Bright Eyes or Dylan.
At a recent live performance, Jack made a comical reference between his guitar and his clothes. The top 3 strings, he remarked, were new, like his jacket, while the bottom 3 were old, like his jeans. An astute observation, illustrating the way Jack, his message, and his music are integral, and how this forges a connection with his audience, the way all good music should.

Brian Campeau: Marathon man
Sydney, Australia
Did you know that the most recorded song in music history is "Yesterday"? More than 1600 versions, from that first legendary midnight recording of the chord progression Paul McCartney said came to him in a dream in 1965, were cut in the next 21 years alone, let alone the twenty since then. Or that German Thomas Scholl holds the record for fastest yodel, managing to squeeze 22 tones (including 15 falsetto) into a single second?
Just a few fascinating factoids brought to you by the Guinness World Records website, which I'm browsing as I try to avoid uni work and find an interesting segue into my topic for the day. Bah, that'll have to do - I'm here to plug a little event going on one week from now as part of the Sydney Uni's "Verge" arts festival. SClub favourite Brian Campeau ("and friends", adds the Verge guide) will be setting up on the Manning forecourt from next Monday the 18th, and staying there. Yes, Monsieur Campeau et ses amis are attempting to set the world record for longest continuous band performance by playing non-stop for 50 hours. And they need your help! For the attempt to be valid the band need at least ten conscious audience members at all times, so they are asking you to bring sleeping bags and snacks and your teddy and whatever you need to hang out for a while and help make history. (There is also talk of 2am pillow fights.) Besides which, the show is also bound to be a thoroughly satisfying one, full of Brian's inventive musical quirks and virtuoso performances - at least until it descends into a thoroughly entertaining mix of random jamming and Journey covers. (Well, here's hoping.) So if you're heading home in the Broadway/ Chippendale/ Newtown/ Camperdown area or just feel like a quick live music fix before work (and who doesn't every now and then?), head down Manning Road and drop in on these brave soldiers in the fight against, um, gigs ending.
At the other end of the musical time spectrum, tickets to Muse's Sydney and Melbourne gigs in January sold out in a mere twelve minutes this morning. (I'm rather tickled to have helped out there.) The band were clearly prepared and second shows were announced in both cities; at the time of writing these were being snatched up like copies of Lady Chatterley's Lover in a high school library. If you still miss out, I wouldn't worry - the tour is promoted by Lees and West, so keep saving those shraps for the opposite of a little night in...

KRILL

So I'm sitting here listening to the latest female fronted band that's caught my eyes, sorry, I mean ears. Sydney band KRILL is like an 80's explosion. Synths, jiving guitars, heavy drums and Sleater Kinneyish type vocals - they have the complete package and having just browsed the Unearthed charts for the umpteenth time, the rest of Australia would agree (3 songs in the top 100).
Enjoy these tunes from a new up and comer.

From The Archives: The Winters

Anyway I've just been sitting here listening to the wireless when the new single from Sydney outfit The Winters came on. 'How fitting' I thought while feeling like a dejected Russian at the end of the Cold War. But as the song played on it began to warm me, ok not literally - I was still frickin freezing, but at least it made me smile on this average Tuesday (damn mid-week blues. Wednesdays should be holidays - Please Johnny, we promise we'll get more work done). A Beatelesque tune with nice rolling guitars and fantastic vocals to back it up (listen to the vocals on some other tracks - excellent). The song also features a 'la da di da da dum' to sing along to when you feel like a bit of karaoke in the car (we all do it occasionally).
Enjoy this on a cold winters day (or a hot summers day - so jealous of all you people in the northern hemisphere right now, I hope it's raining).

The Preytells - The W.A Deli Does It Again!

Goddamit! How much goodness can one city serve! S Town should be jealous of these folk! Seriously! I have made it my mission of late to cross the Nullabour Plains and pay a visit to the 'Fremantle Doctor' to sample some fine, tasty, super cool tunes. For those of you who aren't aware, you most probably just read the above and thought "hmmm....what!? Stuey's daily source of essential musical fibre comes from some strange doctor practicing a wierd medicine called 'Fremantle' in the middle of some f-ing desert! Whoa!". Well as much as we pride ourselves on our depth of research here at Sandwich Club, I have to let you down and say no I was in Perth. Well not physically but....... ah anyways. There is this band there that captivated me today as the rain imposed a lockdown and the wind belted my hammock into next week.
THE PREYTELLS create a cocoon of warmth around you when their folding riffs cruise over you. The kind of warmth you would feel when sitting in a loungeroom surrounded by an open fire and dwarfing leather couches whilst guzzling a bottle of your finest red (mwahah!). THE PREYTELLS are a tight knit familial combination consisting of Will Tell, his brother Jacob on Bass, Cousin Audrey on lead guitar and vocals, B Tell on drums. They are clearly 60's savvy but aren't without obvious modern day influences such as Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Jose Gonzalez, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jeff Buckley and of course Radiohead. So when it storms, or your other sambos are stale, let these guys take over your stereo. You will be greeted by a new experience.

Band Comp - better than a recorder recital

Anyway, kids, today I'm talking about a couple of the bands who have beat out 60 other acts to make it to the grand final of the Sydney Uni Band Competition. While the rest of us have been buried under mountains of textbooks, beavering away at our studies, these guys have been frantically trying to think of names, borrowing equipment, rehearsing and then taking over Manning. Tomorrow's final is a smorgasbord of brand new tasty snacks. Following in the footsteps of previous winners The Vines, Frenzal Rhomb, Front End Loader and, er, Tim Freedman from The Whitlams, will be:
Cloud Control! Didn't I tell ya they were awesome? Weeks ago I told ya! Regular readers will know how I feel about this band. To sample from the Chilis, they give me that funny feeling in my tummy. And I ain't talkin 'bout no salmonella. Fucking magic live, too.
Cloud Control - Look There.mp3
The Emma Davis Band! This girl has a voice that tugs at you, at once warm and haunting, fuzzy round the edges like an old photo of someone you haven't seen in years. You'll see her with her band tomorrow night, but even with just an acoustic guitar you can hear the bittersweet strength that threads through her melodies.
Emma Davis - Fisherman.mp3
Richard In Your Mind! I heard their demo on FBi a few months back and I love the sound. It's something you'd put on a mixtape for getting high on a picnic blanket, holding your hands up to a blue sky and marvelling at their funny shape, in between a Wolf Parade song and some Flaming Lips. I will be most intrigued to see them live.
Richard In Your Mind - The New Sun.mp3
super FLORENCE jam! These boys rock so good (I mean, well) that even this English nerd can forgive them the annoying capitalisation. SClub's own Fauce proclaims himself a fan of a little sFj spread on his morning toast, and we do love a band we can fit into our bread-based-foodstuffs analogy. Anyway, listen to the vocal cords on this bloke!
super FLORENCE jam - Dream.mp3
Rex Banner! If you like your tunes frenetic, loud and angry, this is for you. I dig the Simpsons reference, although it doesn't quite seem to fit their blend of punkish fury and metal riffs. But there were more bands in this vein at the start of this comp than there were black fingernails at Taste Of Chaos, so clearly they've that something special to be the last ones standing.
Rex Banner - X The Eliminator.mp3 (MySpace download)
Justin Zelzer and the Stage Fright Trio! - this fella (yes, it's a solo act - geddit?) doesn't have anything online to look at or download. Now, an artist without MySpace is like a kid at uni wearing a plain t-shirt. It's like...Huh? But... how do you declare your musical inclinations? Your political stance? Your brand of humour? How do I define you without knowing your taste in funky graphics??? But I've heard the word "awesome" applied to him by several different parties.
Anyway, the best way to find out is to head down to Manning Bar for 6.30 tomorrow night (Thursday for the chronologically challenged) and join the throng. Crowds, tunes, lights, cutthroat competition- it's like Idol, only you don't have to put up with a couple of shitty haircuts telling the performers they're "just not feeling it, mate", and none of these guys will be supporting Mark Holden at Terry Hills RSL in six months' time.

The Black Arts

So once again I'm indebted to MySpace Tom. I think I'm up to about 8 sexual favours now. My latest obligations are thanks to 5 piece Brissy band The Black Arts.
Combine grainy drunken vocals with some tinkling piano loops, bashed out acoustic strings, boozy harmonies, frenetic riffage and a spattering of slide guitar, and you have a sound that everyone can love. Sure, they may not be trying to re-invent the wheel (yet), but at their core is an ability to write great songs. And this (despite what people at certain magazines and websites will tell you), is far more important than experimenting with endangered bird-life in the hope of discovering new samples.
Personally, I'd need masking tape and a staple gun to stop myself singing along to these little numbers. They have an EP coming out in October and word is they'll be heading south of the border to Syd and Melb to perform some of their mojo. Im looking forward to it like I look forward to my morning coffee, or my afternoon beer, or my evening... ummm... never mind.
So nab these tunes then head to their MySpace for a couple more, and come out with your hands up..

Australia adopts Shaky Hands

So our latest addition to the Australian ranks is Shaky Hands. There has been so much hype surrounding this band of late and well deserved. Their music isn't difficult - it's common indie punk but sometimes simple is the best formula. These guys play it to a tee. Catchy guitar riffs, fast-paced drums - you'll be on the DF doing your best Parkinson's in no time. Have a listen to this little gem.. it's choice eh bro? No! it's bloody marvellous mate.

From The Archives: Pinky Tuscadero
Sydney, Australia
Pinky Tus-kahh-dare-oh! Is what ran over my tongue and through my lips as I wrote this. Say it to yourself a few times, go on and watch or listen to what happens. Unknowingly you start to pronounce the phrase, not just speak it. Attitude, flare and a certain amount of cool start to ooze from it. Pinky Tus-kahh-dare-oh! Why does this happen? Well, in need of some answers, I hit the net (mmhoi) searching for the phrase that sounded like some 'has been' actor's stage name."The result" I hear you ask:
On "Happy Days," Roz Kelly played 'Pinky Tuscadero', Fonzie's biker girlfriend. "On less happy days, you might not want to see her in action again" police say.
Ms. Kelly has been jailed since Nov. 29 last year, when she allegedly grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun and shot up her neighbour's car and apartment after being awakened by a blaring car alarm. Sounds out of contol huh? Well, looking back, if that scene was part of a movie these guys would have to be on the soundtrack... Why?
Making my way down to Sandwich Club's domestic lurk, Candys Apartment, last Friday night, my fellow bloggers and I witnessed one 'outta' control, but extremely tasty, sandwich. Pinky Tuscadero. Try to imagine being drawn directly to the front of a room by a stage musical with punk rock A.D.D (yes it is a diagnosable condition) . Instantly we were amazed as their frontwoman howled, poured and projected her show stopping voice into our ears with enough 'cool' to snap freeze Fonzie's cucumber. A constant theatrical presence was maintained by Pinky Tuscadero's troupe as they lit up the stage with a boom crash punk score and antics to match. At the end of the set, I needed a cigarette, and I don’t even smoke. All I can say is anyone gotta light?

Debbie does Sydney
Sydney, Australia
Despite the 1990's best efforts to shun the 80's with its fancy bangles, leg tight jeans and rude bird's nests for hair it seems that the 00's or whatever we call it (what do we call it?) is trying its very hardest to bring it all back.
One thing I've noticed in the "scene" is that the "scene" is changing. Yes the "scene" is in a period of transition completely lost in limbo between electronica and rock. This is similar to the 80's, however it was rock on the out and electronica on the in. Nevertheless it confuses me. Like just the other day at the hairdressers - do I keep it long as a mullet or do I cut it short? I'm lost and judging by everyone else I see in the "scene" they're lost too... at least I'm not wearing makeup - not yet anyway.
