Aleks & The Ramps

Melbourne, Australia
Someone asked me the other day what instrument I would play if I was in a band. Easy. The most underrated of all. The Banjo. Ever since Kermit the Frog pulled out one of these for 'Rainbow Connection', I've been hooked. Disappointingly, our fair music scene falls way behind the ranks in the Banjo department. Hopefully bands like Aleks & The Ramps will change all that. Long live (love) the Banjo.

Sandwiches to kick off your long weekend...

We're starting off the long weekend in Sydney this Friday night with a double headliner extravaganza.
After a six month break, we're welcoming back old friends Tokyo Blonde fresh with plenty of new tunes as they launch their latest EP. We highly recommend these local Sandwich Club faves.
Sharing the spotlight are none other than Debbie, releasing their highly anticipated single 'Blind' which you can preview at their myspace site here.
In support, we have Sydney indie rockers, Flying Foxes. A new exciting incarnation on teh Sydney live scene. To quote our very own website: 'it's the subtleties that carry you away, and underline this bands true potential. A shy glockenspiel, marching percussion, distorted base, and a cacophony of bubbles and squeaks that pump tingles down your spine.'
And last of the bands but definitely not least we have The Bungalows opening the night reminding us that garage is far from dead. Ever heard heavy rock infused with reggae? Check out 'Here I Am' off their debut EP. One of the Baron's favourite songs of 2007.
Deejay smeejays to see out the rest of the night: Hey Now!, Mixtape Mafia, Andy Webb, Dave Dirt, Tri Hardz, Justin, Red Roll, Tim Park vs Twiggy and Baron Von Hutch

Yen

Sydney, Australia
I've been walking around the world for 7 months and only just strapped into my second pair of black volleys. When you spend this long in the same shoes you can't help but develop an affection for the trusty old pair. Atticus really was right when he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. They are an extension of me and my personality. I love them and they love me. And that's the way it's supposed to be. So let's all make today a shoe day and take a minute to tell our shoes we love them. They deserve it.

The Vellocets

Sydney, Australia
This is what indie music is about. Having a shitload of potential and the self-belief and enthusiasm to conceive it. Having limited resources to parade it, but a support network that demands you deliver and push forward any way you can. A band of young talent not afraid to make a beastly recording of a brilliant song using a digital camera, and proudly stamp their name on it. A pressing need just to be heard, and a burning ambition for bigger and better things. Welcome to the newest young indie blood on the Sydney scene....

The Revolutionary Kind

Sydney, Australia
These guys have created a mixed sound of genres ranging from rock, country and a big dash of pop. The Revolutionary Kind's 5-track demo has grown on me for the past few months. As I listen more and more I discover layers and think of walking through the country side, striding guitars supported with easy laid back keys, a bass line rolling you along the hills and a drummer pushing you up like that old Massey Ferguson tractor.
Vance's singing has a slight Dylanesque drawl, without the liquor perhaps! And his lyrics have a story telling that encapsulate the music written with it, taking you on a 'revolutionary kind' of journey. Not having seen these guys play live I can only guess it gets better, as the demo lacks a bit of dynamic range, with the lower ends becoming a little muddled and some of the high ends piercing the ears.
In all this is great head bopping foot tapping music, from the opening track Pop Life, to the closing track Escapades, you start grooving more and more.

Head of Femur - A nice little surprise in my inbox this morning

Chicago, Illinois
Despite our focus on the Australian music scene, we get so many emails everyday from artists or labels from around the world asking us to check out their tunes. As you could imagine, it's an arduous task trying to get through all of them. Occasionally we will sit down and go through a bunch, and this morning was one such time (a little early into work, a little bored already).
After browsing through a few, I stopped on one from the artist, Head of Femur. I connected immediately with the first chord of the first song. The quirkiness of Of Montreal, the ballads of Super Furry Animals and the voice of Conor Oberst aka Bright Eyes - this is right up my alley (or maybe my music tastes are getting too fucking out there!). Anyway the track 'Leader and the Falcon' has just made my day. Here are a couple more to check out too.

Ned Collette - New Single

Melbourne, Australia
I find there are two types of music listeners, those who love lyrics and those who love melody. I fall in the latter group but that by no means is better. Each to their own. Music in however way you interpret it affects us all (and severely underrated... try and count how many songs you hear in a day. It's everywhere!). Given there are these two sides to music, every now and then an artist pops up that seemingly fills the void (Neil Young was the greatest!) Well Ned Collette is one such artist. Beautiful, folky melodies supporting amazing lyrics that seamlessly fit together to pluck at the emotions. In fact his music runs on so many levels you could listen to him intensely or just have him on in the background while playing cards.
Enjoy this single from Ned's upcoming new album, Future Suture, out late September through Dot Dash.

The Paper Scissors - New Album Preview

Sydney, Australia
Does anyone watch TV anymore? I don't that much.. Between Facebook and Youtube I don't really have the time these days. Anyway, view on demand aka Youtube is so much more convenient. Well for the minority who live in the nineties, you've probably seen the Riva coffee ad with that awesome coolio funk track from none other than the best band in Australia, The Paper Scissors. Well you can nab it from here given one proviso, you go to their album launch this Friday at Spectrum...
I love this track.
