Ned Collette

Melbourne, Australia
Most of the time covers annoy me. Perfectly capable (and commonly incapable) artists ripping off material to better their public profile doesn't taste too good to me. Aggressive attitude it may seem. But I have found an exception. One of the most unlikely covers to capture my attention is "Hours" by Ned Collette. A lucid, red wine spin on the already tasty track by TV On The Radio which they recorded in collaboration with Blonde Redhead. My justification for not 'pigeon-holing' this sterling effort in with the other 80% of profile boosting stunts is the fact that this widely travelled 'Melbournite' places a dark, folky feel into this synonymously jived up song. We can expect to hear more mysteriously sombre music from Ned too, a follow up album to "Jokes and Trials" (July 2006) is expected very soon through Dot Dash Recordings and Remote Control Records. If this track is anything to go by, I wait clanging my knife and fork in anticipation. Check him out on these dates:

February 28th - Rocket Bar, Adelaide w/Camera Obscura
March 1st - Grace Emily, Adelaide w/New Buffalo
March 2nd - Beck's Verandah Bar, Perth w/Camera Obscura
March 3rd - Prince Of Wales, Bunbury
March 8th - The Troubadour, Brisbane w/New Buffalo
March 9th - The Vanguard, Sydney w/New Buffalo
March 10th - The Vanguard, Sydney w/New Buffalo
March 15th - Curtin House Rooftop, Melbourne w/New Buffalo

Gig Pick TUESDAY

Tuesday:

Wons Phreely
Ruby Rabbit - seven dollars
Wons Phree-LySpace
Wons Phreely and Ruby Rabbit go together like John Butler and American foreign policy, but regardless of the ill-fitting venue, it'll be a night of mellow, engaging music, sweet melodies and charming lyricism.

Wednesday:
Dead Letter Chorus
The Hopetoun - eight dollars
Let this rich, folky six piece take you away on your favorite lush green adventure. You will be impressed!
myspace

Thursday:
Pivot, Richard In Your Mind
Hopetoun - ten dollars
Richard In Your MindSpace
If Pivot made a sandwich it'd be filled with the swirling ocean on a storming night. Richard In Your Mind would be the psychadelic acid milkshake served on the side. It wouldn't really be much of a meal.

Friday:
Peter Bjorn & John, Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers
Cuthbert & The MySpacers
The Metro - thirty eight + booking fee
We wouldn't be a blog if we didn't give due notice to these whistling Swedes, who play their folktronica love-pop (just making up genres now), with support from Sydney's own lads Cuthbert & the Nightwalkers.
AND PROPS TO: Holy crap there's a lot on tonight. Head to MUM for Children Collide, Factory for the Walkmen, Bar Broadway for the Spark's EP Launch, and the all-ages Friday I’m In Love - Dappled, Teenagersintokyo, Bang Gang DJs AND it's for a good cause.

Saturday:
Bad Kids Recreation Club
Bar Broadway - fifteen dollars
BKRC
Okay it's not strictly a gig, but there'll be music, colour, love and a heap of "Do's" at Vice Magazine's student guide launch party this week. So: pretty much like Mardi Gras but sans G-strings. Actually I take that back, there'll probably be G-strings.

Sunday:
Flamingo Crash, Nancy Vice's Beau Monde
The Filth @ Beach Road Hotel
Flamingo Crash, Beau Monde
It's like both these bands have gotten your everyday synth-rock, mixed in some garage punk, and then wrapped it up in courageous vocals. A huge package of gritty fun with a multi-coloured bow on top, and we promise you will dance.

Sparkadia: Things Behind The Sun

Sydney, Australia
The melodic indie pop anthems of Sparkadia are well known to many in Sydney but it may come as a surprise that they've only just released their debut EP, Things Behind The Sun with local label Boundary Sounds. After following the band for some time, it was nice to finally hear something polished from the group. Things Behind The Sun is an excellent debut and one is left with a sense of optimism - they'll make it. Lying somewhere between Doves and Cold Play, Sparkadia's sound is unique in a pop rock dominated Australian music scene. 'Morning Light' is a clear highlight, their first single which has been well received by many radio stations around the country. Also excellent tracks are the dreamy psychedelic number 'Follow The Sun' and the epic 'Devil In Me'; my favourite.

Sparkadia's EP launch is this Friday at Bar Broadway. Check their website for details.

Upcoming shows
Thur Mar 1: Wollongong University
Wed Mar 2 : bar broadway, sydney
Thur Mar 8: tivoli, brisbane w/ Elbo

The Ripping Dylans

Sydney, Australia
Not only are they ripping Dylan, but The Eagles, The Doors, The Stooges, Velvet Underground, and just about every other long-haired American garage band that performed without a shirt on. But as they join Wolfmother and Walrus in rehashing an older style of choice, they are once again proving you don't need an original sound to squeeze out a good tune, and get the crowd sweating. Welcome The Ripping Dylans to Sydney's vanguard of anti-experimental-pop.

You Heard It Here Last: Red Riders & The Ghosts, 23/02/07

Sydney, AU

THE GHOSTS
The first time I saw these guys it was at @Newtown RSL in September last year supporting Howling Bells, and we had no idea who they were. They played well and we were impressed but on stage, they looked like the gangly little brother of your best friend who stands in the living room while you're watching videos, showing off his mad Gameboy/skateboard/cartwheel skillZ. Six months later and I don't know, they grew facial hair or bought some new clothes or something, but Holy Crap.

Their sound has changed just as much. Their faint emulation of the indie new-wave that was all the rage back then has now matured into something deeper, something that dapples tentatively in prog, shoegaze and post-rock - but still holds onto that straight-up danceable pop reminiscent of early Red Riders. Noise and distortion built up climactically around melodic swirls that tied their set together, and the vocals were incredible. I'm extremely skeptical of hype, especially hype of the 'will they/wont they' Modular variety, but I left my self-righteous, self-imposed cynicism at the Annandale on Friday night. Yeah fine. Okay. The Ghosts are awesome. Maybe soon I'll even get into Klaxons..

RED RIDERS
Following the Ghosts, a dramatic opaque screen was lowered to shroud the on-stage arrival of the headlining Red Riders. It was a bizarre gimmick that I'm still confused about - intended ironically, or vaguely ostentatious? Is it still showy if it's well-deserved? [27.02 : I'm happy to report I am an idiot, and was unaware of the Annandale tradition of screening before each new act. It is not ostentatious or showy, and in fact I kinda enjoyed the build up - Stephbot]

IN ANY CASE, the screen was eventually lifted to the opening bars of 'Come On', and they moved on to play a tight mix of favourites from Plan A and Replica Replica. The band was loving it as much as the hordes of fans, exuding the confidence they picked up over 2006, and revelling in a contagious energy that bounced around the room. It was clearly a year spent well, not just producing a strong LP and dealing admirably with all the buzz, but perfecting their live act. Sure, they didn't experiment with their sound or play around with their songs as much as they could have, but they gave the crowd exactly what they wanted and then some. Except for the disappointed first three rows of groupies who went home to empty beds... Ahh... So much love for the Riders out there.

Fionn Regan

Bray, Ireland
Fionn Regan stole my heart when he, for perhaps the first time in lyrical history, tapped into my love for the rhodesian ridgeback. I had one as a kid, but she lapsed into doggy dementure and I had to use a supersoaker to feed the poor old thing. But I loved that dog. And Fionn Regan has rekindled that love and made it his own, as he likes to delve into our past and drag out old memories.

The video for Be Good Or Be Gone, is testament to this Irish farm boy's ability to find a more interesting side to simple everyday things. He's the kind of guy who would prefer talking to caterpillars than girls, or wind his clock back and pretend its morning again. The kind of guy you could just listen to all day long, and not feel obliged to utter a single word.

I highly recommend you catch one of his stories while he's down here (especially the Basement gig!):

Holidays On Ice

Sydney, Australia
Being a half caste Canadian, I've spent many a holidays on ice. It's cold, wet and unless you're spending the season skiing, it's damn miserable. Despite this, there are strange folk who actually enjoy winter (in fact I'm sure they're the ones who like cats too... why?). So when I received a copy of Sydney band Holidays On Ice's debut album, Playing Boyfriend and Girlfriends I was slightly pessimistic. Ice does not mean happy.
Well what a surprise, there was more holiday than ice and this album is a cracker. Happy lofi indie pop anthems spew forth from the stereo and I'm overcome with euphoria. Life is great, cats are good. Hmm... perhaps I've gone too far.
Such a happy band could be fronted by none other than the gorgeous Angie Hart of Frente! fame. Yes, Frente! The ex-happiest band in the world. Also fronting the band is Dean Manning of Leonardo's Bride - a stellar cast of who was once who and is now who in the Australian indie scene.

Check out these little numbers and if you like, order a copy of Playing Boyfriends and Girlfriends from Inertia.... and, if you really, really like, buy Frente!'s debut Marvin the Album. If you can get over 'Accidentally Kelly Street' you'll realise what a classic it really is.

Love Of Diagrams 'Mosaic'

Melbourne, Australia
It is no secret that there is an abundance of quality bands floating within and around our shores lately. This is certainly a tick in the 'hell yeah!' column. However it does allow for certain hardworking bands to slip through our eagerly awaiting ears. Love Of Diagrams seem to be one of those teflon coated bands. Sure they have graced the shores of Japan, The States and Europe but the 'props' and 'cred' on the domestic side of things seem to be minor when placed next to other bands with much smaller itineraries. In admition I have fallen victim to the cloudy deception of 'the hype' dark side and have sampled the tasty LOD Eps but never really listened. So I have decided to use the force and listen to a band that has maintained a strong link to their instrumental roots since their first release back in 2003. A few Eps later, the new album "Mosaic" is set to be released. Below is a keyhole to have a peep through. Their music is rousing and covers all octaves. A chorus line of harping, scratchy, howling guitars are the main feature. Be stirred. Be intrigued. Be a peeping tom.

PS: You can snare LOD playing the Melbourne St Jerome's Laneway Festival on the 24th February with Swedish sweathearts Love Is All who were interviewed by our very own saucy Faucy. Fear not it will be posted momentarily! Stay tuned!

PPS: A little birdy told me the tasty record label releasing "Mosaic" is also releasing the new Art of Fighting album. Oooooh! Thats not all! New Buffalo, Wolf & Cub, Voxtrot, The Hold Steady! Check out Remote Control Records. They are my new tasty deli full of exotic flavors!

Soma for Kinder

Sydney, Australia
Gotta love a good band name, and this Sydney four piece have hit it on the nose with theirs. They have just released their debut EP through Illumination Records which you can buy online. There is a noticeable thread of melancholy in their tunes, created with atmospheric synths and sparse keys, but most of all through the enchanting vocals of female lead, Tanya Horo. EP opener and first single, 'Spooked' plays off their name incorporating music-box and dreamy vocals. At times they sound like a sedated Goldfrapp, but mostly I can't put my finger on what they are. This music has medicinal properties, it will cure insomnia.. but in a good way.

A response to a song

OOOH! Shinsy, shimmery opening fuzz... Twiddly, vibey bits wander off in the background. Sounds like pavement - not so much the band, although there's bit of that... but also like sun-warmed paths on a bright February afternoon. I find myself nodding along. It's too hot to do anything else, and this song is so summery it just seemed to get a little hotter... but in a nice paddle-pool-in-the-backyard kind of way. I need something fizzy and cold and mildly alcoholic. Also, I have a craving for something else... PINKERTON!!! That's it. I need to go hear myself some Weezer.

But first I need to listen to this song again. Listen! There's a doo-doo-doo breakdown in the middle...

MP3: The Comas - Red Microphones

PS Now I've recovered from my little end-of-summer happy music coma (see what I did there?) I can tell you that The Comas are from North Carolina slash New York and have a disc entitled Spells out on Vagrant records in April.

Bedroom Fidelity

Brooklyn, New York
Right at this moment in the cold and grey suburb of Williamsburg NY, one man stands alone in his small, cramped bedroom, doing something offensive. Not in an "oh God, Sebastian why don't you ever lock the door" kind of way. More like, "how can ONE guy do SO much, this is just indecent".

Inlets are Sebastian Krueger; his voice, his clarinet, his bells, his ukulele, his accordion, his -well, what have you got? He's contributed in the past to My Brightest Diamond, but his solo project he describes as "bedroom fidelity", which I guess is like lo-fi but... more private and confined. The lightly haunting music couples an earnest intimacy with elusive lyrics, poetic imagery with intricate arrangements, detailed vocals with an unpredictable melody. And I discovered him at the best time and place I could.

The place? Union Hall, a teeny pub/venue/bowling-alley in Williamsburg where he was supporting a Deerhoof side-project the Curtains at the beginning of this year. Other than the music, the highlight of the night was Krueger's charming confession during one of the early songs that he'd forgotten the first line, needing an off-stage friend to prompt him. The time? Three days after I'd finally vowed to end to my five-month addiction to Sufjan Steven's Come On Feel The Illinoise, thus leaving a decidedly Sufjan-shaped hole in my playlist. SO, if you're into a bit of the Soof, you'll love a bit of the Inlets - and you'll be happy to know that Krueger has given the go-ahead for everyone to download the whole delightful EP online.

We Have A New Love God(dess)

Im having flashbacks of Christmas, when all the blogs around the world bowed to the pressures of convention and posted some really crappy Christmas songs.
Once again we find ourselves playing nicely into the hands of greeting card companies, cracking under the expectation of having to spend money on a 'loved' one. It may be a bad excuse to buy pointless gifts but it is a great excuse to play lovey dovey indie music to close out the day.

And thats just what will be happening on FBi Radio tonight, as Eliza Sarlos impersonates Richard Mercer for an evening, on my favourite radio program in Australia, Unputdownable.

Ive submitted my dedication to the one I love. Myspace Tom. Because he invented a whole new way of searching for love, more compatible with my inability to look a girl in the eye. Admittedly, I can't touch any boobies online, but I can look at pictures of unsuspecting teenagers, and swoon over their 'about me' sections, without them even knowing, and just pretend! Thanks Tom!

Tune in online from 11pm AEST tonight (Thursday) here.

Faux Pas

Melbourne, Australia
In the old times, one man composers like Mozart and Beethoven would lock themselves in their rooms so they could write their beautiful music while paying dearly for their sanity. As time went on, these men began to lose interest in their rooms (at around the same time women began to show their ankles) and their music suffered as a result. Fast forward a couple of hundred years and we now find artists slowly creeping back to their dens to compose their masterpiece. The reason? Perhaps it's the internerd. You can now live your whole life in cyberspace (minus food and maybe a toilet break - actually I suppose you could use wireless in your bathroom). So lately I rediscovered one man composer Gotye's masterpiece Like Drawing Blood and had the realisation that this was far better than The Avalanches and is arguably Australia's most creative album. But you knew that anyway. So I'm not going to bore you with another Gotye write up. Instead I'll introduce you to another one manner, Faux Pas.

Admittedly I know very little about Faux Pas other than he's from Melbourne and he and Gotye are 'top 8 friends' on myspace - in fact that's how I stumbled across him. Like Gotye, his music is well layered with guitars, bells and whistles, jungle beats, synths, trumpets, vocals - you name it. He's mated house music with an indie sound and made it work.
Check out these tracks. More are available from his website as well as an EP and an LP which you can purchase. Look, there's even a Gotye remix.. Friends for eva.

Special Patrol

Adelaide, Australia

The end of last year saw a new release from Special Patrol, Handy Hints from the Undertaker, and once again it's a shiny melodic nugget of pop. That's pop, not poop. It's obvious from their earlier stuff that the song writing has been honed to a fine art, meaning their attention seems to be turning towards experimenting with sound, structure, and storytelling. It's still acoustic-guitar driven, but the layering is growing more complex and the instrumentation more unusual. I'd say their sound sits somewhere between fellow Aussies Gelbison and The Anyones. A bit of a country influence, harmonies, and clever lyrics delivered with an endearing Adelaide accent.
I swear Adelaide has an accent.

They're touring a lot this year so you shouldn't have a problem catching a gig.

Yoko Ono With Antony

Antony
London, England
I'll admit that I'm a little lost when it comes to the wonderful world of Yoko, but after chatting to Simon from Tic Toc Tokyo last weekend, he finally convinced me that I should take the plunge. Call it fate or coincidence, but around the same time, the fine people at EMI UK sent us a couple of samples of the new Yoko Ono tribute album, Yes, I'm A Witch, which is set for release in a week or so. It's left me feeling some awe for Lennon's other half; it seems she was unjustly overshadowed.
So as I said, we have one more sample to share, this time Antony from Antony & The Johnsons is giving his own take on 'Toy Boat'. Yes that is Yoko singing. The artists were given the original Yoko vocals plus any other musical element they liked from the track and then rerecorded with their own spin.

Yes, I'm A Witch is due for release 19th February

Muscles is old news. He played in December with Girl Talk and in January with Hot Chip, and he's supporting Jenny Wilson's Factory gig next week. He's been all over national and international blogs. And he had that awesome song about the Mel-bourne-in-de-pend-ant-mus-ic-com-munity that probably couldn't have been played more on FBI.

Still, after last night I figured he deserved a bit more love just for making me dance to music that, in any setting other than Spectrum, would have been accompanied by a rainbow of glowsticks and Chuppa Chups. I don't know what it is about him - the cheeky grin, the twee lyrics, the a-tonal vocals - but Muscles manages to take all the hype of the Klaxons-inspired "Holy-Crap-It's-A-Rave-o-Lution!", wrap it up in fairy lights and make it dance.

It was one of the cheesiest things I've seen in a very long time, and the crowd ate it up like icecream. Cheesy icecream. Now there's a taste to savour.

Group Seizure "Hybrid Vigour"

Melbourne, Australia
I had been waiting, salivating, checking my watch and tapping my feet for days on end as Melbourne's kings of energy, furious sounds and fits, Group Seizure said that their new album Hybrid Vigour was being released and would soon find its way into our lunchbox. As I had my first listen to the opening track "The Drink is Drunk" lobes were tingling and the feeling of satisfaction arrived. It was indicative of Group Seizure's trademark '10-Red-Bull-high' approach to music and simply a taste of what awaited me throughout the 9 remaining tracks. Distorted guitar walls close in on you from all sides as an earthquake of electro drum kit beats fall away from underneath you whilst vocals howl and scratch. If you were to liquify this album and bottle it, 'Red Bull' and 'V' would seem like Spring Valley. In fact I call dibs on doing so and calling the drink "Mental". Either you will thrash out to this album or cower in a corner praying to the gods of volume and gain to stop. I chose to thrash. You too can thrash, get along and see Group Seizure at these upcoming gigs:

Fri 16 Feb: ALBUM LAUNCH @ Ding Dong, Melb CBD VIC
w/ Children Collide, Young & Restless and Bang! Bang! Aids!

Sat 3 Mar: The Trout, North Hobart TAS

Crowded House Reforming?

World Tourville?

Now certainly we are all quite aware of the 'golden rule' in every band's lifespan:

GOLDEN RULE #1:
A break up merely constitutes an excuse to reform two years later and make a killing out of a sold out world tour. (cited: "Sandwich Club's Golden Rules for Golden Era Bands To Make More Money.....and Gold"; 2007)

Now who would have thought Crowded House, the infamous Australian and New Zealand pop-rock act:
a) Even heard about, nay picked up this incredible book of golden rules and;
b) Were to reform in 2007 and go on a world tour!

Whilst the later isn't at all surprising seeing as the band is booked to play Coachella in April, it does however amaze me that these golden (grey) oldies still have the energy required to deliver a solid world tour performance. We shall see. Below is a link to a streaming video message from Neil Finn, talking about the reformation of the Crowded House and what is in store for 2007.

Turning Japanesa

London, England
An exciting Yoko Ono tribute album is due for release at the end of February. Yes, I'm A Witch features a diverse range of artists such as The Flaming Lips, Antony & The Johnsons, Cat Power (of course!), The Sleepy Jackson and Peaches (not of course) all covering their favourite tracks from the vast Ono collection. Now before you groan, "not another tribute album", I will say that I've heard a couple of tracks from the album and it is nigh short of excellence. Especially surprising is Peaches with her rendition of 'Kiss Kiss Kiss'. An electro-bubblegum pop sexed up booty shakin ghetto number; you'd cringe if it wasn't for Ono. Instead, it's an enjoyable fun track that will be sure to make it on your nearest dance floor before the end of summer.

The Phoenix Foundation

Wellington, New Zealand
Our brethren across the Tasman Sea have birthed a number of high intensity, shred-happy bands of late. However during the sweating and the drunkenness and the confusion of this new breed, a charming little album has crept under the radar from indie pop mainstays The Phoenix Foundation. Their second album, Pegasus, was released in New Zealand in 2005 and got an Aussie release last year. It's folk, psychadelia, dub and country, all squished up together, with a spattering of Nintendo. Their music has a wistful quality about it, most probably forged from a deficiency of sun and a surplus of sheep. If you need to brood, grab a big ole pair of headphones and make this is your soundtrack.

Whilst they're critical darlings at home, they haven't been shown the love they deserve overseas. With a recent trip to New York for a CMJ show and and a signing to Young American Recordings, hopefully all this will change.

The Hate Game

Sydney, Australia
Just as soon as you think a band is forging a name for themselves in the already hard-nut-to-crack oz music industry, a dreaded grinch-like email hits the band's inbox stating that another band is threatening legal action over the use of same name. Shaky Hands had their shakes fixed and have transformed into Cut Off Your Hands as a result of such an email. Closer to home, one of my favorite tasty little tidbits, The Vendettas are now hailed as The Hate Game. No doubt this affects the band's website hits, downloads and overall momentum. In turn the ability for everyone to stay hungry for their sambos is also hindered. So from now on you can eat these:

Souls She Said

LA, United States

Souls She Said. I don't know why she said it but if she was making some trippy metaphorical reference for how this US band manages to pierce deep into everyone's hidden desire to run wild and thrash about completely ad-lib (possibly nude) to their favorite rock song well then yeah I can see why she did.
The truth is everyone has this hidden desire in their soul, these guys just choose to unleash it. Souls She Said is the alter-ego of non other than the boys of The Icarus Line (Joe Cardamone and Don Devore).
To be honest I hadn't heard of SSS prior to stumbling upon their debut album As Templar Nites, but in the microscopic time frame that I had allocated to listening to this album I realized sharply that I wanted to go back in time and give myself a good "wake up!" slap in the face.
All these splendid tracks are highly danceable or thrashable, more so than those of The Icarus Line. It is an album that you will forever desire to play a dozen decibels above your speaker's capacity just to get back at you old neighbor that calls the cops if you sneeze too loud. Let this Iggy Pop-esque music slap them in the face for you. The Cops would be extremely proud!
Here's a sneaky peak from their album, released in Australia on 3rd February...
