MTV Kickstart Winners: Yves Klein Blue

Brisbane, Australia
Yep, Yves Klein Blue took out the title last Thursday night against some very high quality bands. A nice 'kickstart' of $20,000 in the kitty, as well as a music video produced by MTV to be played over and over and over again on the channel.
Watch out for these guys, they are going to be huge.

Antony of the Future

Adelaide, Australia
These boys are a tight Radeladian 3-piece with a bag of catchy guitar-driven pop tunes. They've been together for a bit over a year and got to play at the Adelaide BDO this year as a result of winning South Australia's JJJ unearthed. An EP has since been recorded (and mastered in L.A.) and tours are on the way to Melbourne, and possibly Sydney. So keep an ear out.
Oh, and they are from the future, so they may or may not wear silver leotards.

Plastic Palace Alice

Melbourne, Victoria
Never before have I heard such an abstract band name. Now before you allow such an attribute to deter you, this eccentric six piece ensemble has one of the most individual, diverse and captivating sounds you will hear this year. Having produced an album (launching later this year) from the same stables as Sleepy Jackson, Dallas Crane, Dukes Of Windsor and The Melvins, Plastic Palace Alice is set to modestly sneak up behind us and let out an eye opening "boo!". Reflecting a diverse number of influences, their music glistens and booms its way into your heart. The band's latest single Empire Falls would turn Rome's bloody topple into a cascading flow of refreshing bloom. Consequently some of the Sandwich Club favorites are keeping company with PPA: Brendan Welch, Dukes Of Windsor, The Inches, Batrider, The Beautiful Few, Tobias Cummings and recently The Seabellies. Quite a crew! I can't wait for the album.

The Seabellies

Newcastle (Sydney?), Australia
After winning the right to play at the highly anticipated VFestival this weekend, The Seabellies have gone from respected local act to a national success in a matter of weeks. Admittedly I jumped on the bandwagon having known very little of the band pre-VFest but that said, I've become a slave to their beautiful, dreamy melodies.
The Seabellies make lullabies for adults. Perfect while you're reflecting, drifting off to sleep (or rocking out at a festival). If you're going to V, try and get there at the ridiculous time of 12:30 to catch these guys play. It will be worth missing that one (or three) pre-festival drinks.

The Preytells

Perth, Australia
The Sandwich Club loves The Preytells. Unfortunately some mountains that are really hills and then a stretch of desert around 3,500 km long separate us. We could fly of course, but Chucky is afraid of heights. For now we'll just settle on their debut EP, I Could Change Your Mind.
An excellent start from the sixties inspired pop band touted by many to really make it - 2005 winners of the National Campus Band Competition and winners of Triple J's 'Play at Southbound Competition' last year.
It is a prelude to their upcoming LP which they plan to record over the next year. Check out this track from the four and if you like, buy the EP which I highly recommend. They're all great songs! (Check out others over myspace if you're not sure)

Peregrine

Sydney, Australia
A good songwriter is also a good storyteller. The lyrics, the melody, the rhythm - a multi-dimensional world guided by the writer but created by the listener. This is one such gift of good music; its ability to transport you to far off places that are inaccessible from your current situation. Peregrine have that. Swashbuckling, rollicking melodies through the seas of the unknown. Although the music is not that similar, I am reminded of the first time I heard The Coral due to their ability to convey this sense of adventure.
Peregrine
are on the verge of releasing their second LP, Stay Inside and Misbehave this is their first single off it, 'The Good Ship'. Judging by this preview, it's sure to be a success... By the way, check out their oldie 'Fingerpointing' from their 2003 debut. It's a great track as well.

Peregrine are playing at The Loft, UTS this Tuesday night. Check them out and the venue... We are actually in talks with the venue for running a Saturday night "party" in conjunction with our monthly Thursday night.

Love Is All new single & interview

Gothenburg, Sweden
During our little drunken stint at Sydney's St Jerome's Laneway Festival this little blogger fell in love on numerous occasions. Before you jump to the obvious reasoning that there was a saturation of bountiful 'Laneway Lasses' present, don't be so hasty. There was also a bountiful vibe and line-up to complement such a blessing. I fell in love all over again with those Scandinavian indie cuties Love Is All. I think that hating these guys would be likened to hating a Labrador puppy. You just can't. So to my excitement I have procured their new double A side single Nothing To Be Done / Ageing Had Never Been His Friend (March 26th). If you too are suffering from "Laneway-itis" this is bound to numb the sting. As a flip side, much to our disappointment, our efforts to post our phone interview with Josephine (Vocals) have been thwarted by a faulty Dictaphone. Argh. Apologies. So as a replacement here is a video interview.

The Ruby Suns

Auckland, New Zealand
Their sound lies somewhere between Youthgroup (but more creative) and Dappled Cities (but not as creative). So it may only be a matter of time before The Ruby Suns cover yet another 1984 'classic', or get remixed by DFA. However, judging by the attention they've had on US Blogs, I feel these Kiwis are more than capable of making it with their own sound, as they join a host of other quality acts on the impressive Lil' Chief Label, leap-frogging Australia, straight to the UK, Europe, US and beyond.

Motocade

Auckland, New Zealand
We all know how much Bloc Party's new album sucked. So for all you other disappointed fans like myself suffering post-silent-alarm-depression, inject yourself with a dose of local medicine. New Zealand's Motocade have a distinctly Bloc-Partyish sound, crossed with Kings of Leon and The Rakes, and a Murray Lightburn mix of falsetto and wailing vocals that send their music in all different directions. Both songs below are from they're second EP, Into The Fall.

Sandwich Club This Thursday!

FREE FAIRY BREAD!

Sydney, Australia
Oh dear we are at it again. Its true the Sandwich Club has had an itch of late for Sydney bands. This Thursday is going to be the 'scratch-o-matic' that gets to all the hard to reach places and leaves you delightfully fulfilled with the contorted, yet satisfied position you are left in.

Fait Accompli
have carried out an enormous blitzkrieg on the music scene in the last few months with a gourmet shopping list of impressive gigs coming off a surge of spicy hype. Fresh from their MTV appearance on The Lair these lads are ready to suck you in and feed you their deep purple garage, tribal rock punch that permeates your earlobes upon your first taste. Don't worry, The Sandwich Club team will be there to conjure an excuse for being unable to move at work the next day.

MP3: Fait Accompli - Shut Up And Dance
myspace - sandwichclub post

The Chequered Leopards
are in extremely high demand at the moment which you will see with their string of gigs in the next few weeks. They are the perfect company to keep for the FA lads as their Mess Hall / Kings of Leon flavour kills any hope you have of leaving after the free fairy bread is polished. These 'chequered' beasts cut quick to the catchy, gritty blues infused rock tunes that turn your ears from hunters to the hunted. Oh my!

MP3: The Chequered Leopards - Big Business
myspace - sandwichclub post

Now the only reason that we have backed up our "free fairy bread" offer is to dampen down the shrieks of the tumultuous teens from Papa vs Pretty. Believe me after hearing their brand new tunes last week we are picking these guys to be the ones to watch. They are all under 17 and have been some of the most polished musicians ever to take our stage. Last time they played at Sandwich Club the masses swarmed into the back room. This time they are on the main stage! Yes you will thank us. I mean them.

ROCK GODS

Australia and New Zealand
We've been following this for quite some time, the MTV Kickstart Competition. Now it's your time to vote. State vs state, mate vs mate etc... whatever

NSW Finalist - Walrus
Played at the January Sandwich Club. Kickarse blues-infused garage rock that has nothing to do with The Beatles. My favourite of the bunch.

MP3: Walrus - War!
myspace - vote

Victoria Finalist - Dance With Voices
Also played at a Sandwich Club night. Electro rock that is incredibly popular in the indie scene at the moment. I once heard them play I cover of Daft Punk's Around The World - I've been sold on them ever since.

MP3: Dance With Voices - RE: Model
myspace - vote

Queensland Finalist - Yves Klein Blue
Libertines inspired pop rock. Admittedly I know nothing about this band but I've just listened to all their tunes over myspace and I absolutely love them.. I want more! Bring back Brit Pop!

MP3: Yves Klein Blue -Polka
myspace - vote

Western Australia Finalist - The Avenues
They cite influences from Spoon, The Beatles, Radiohead and Muse. Enough said.

MP3: The Avenues - Sleep Till Dawn

South Australia Finalist - Special Patrol
Experimental pop from Adelaide with similarities to Super Furry Animals and Beck. Chuckwagon has not stopped talking about them since he heard their new release Handy Hints From The Undertaker.

MP3: Special Patrol - Same Blood

New Zealand Finalist - Dukes
Jumpy rockabilly from Christchurch. Lots of bass and drums wrapped up into a pop rock sound. New Zealand will put up a fight.

Gareth Eunson

Melbourne, Australia
In this metro-male inspired world of the 21st century you would think the days of dirty, bluesy, garage rock are numbered. On the contrary, the genre is thriving because in each and every one of us there is a cowboy stirring inside, waiting for the day we can ride o'er yonder with gun in hand and on our trusty wolf in toe (mine's called 'Two Socks').
Gareth Eunson wants you to be that cowboy; now. His rollicking blues-inspired tunes will put you in the mood to err, rob a bank, take down Mayor Iemma or hijack a train (anyone know what happened on the Harbour Bridge this afternoon?). It's lucky for our fair police that he has only 82 friends on myspace (sure to change given he's currently on the front page of Triple J Unearthed).

Dappled does Dallas's brother, Austin.

I said my little farewell to Dappled Cities the other day at Laneway Festy with a raised fist in the air, tequila in my guts and a tear in my eye. They're outta town to play SXSW, and start working that cracker of an album, Granddance, all over the States.

Speaking of things both grand and dappled, they have just had 'Fire, Fire, Fire' pinched by DFA, those production whizkids from NY, James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy. They're shit hot right now, so its all smiles for Dappled as the sail off into the sunset. Have fun..

Heres the original and the DFA version.

Gig Pick Tuesday

Tuesday

The Necks
The Basement - twenty plus booking fee
If you don't know who they are after THIRTEEN ALBUMS, you'll have to pretend you do and say words like "jam", "kraut" and "experimental".

Wednesday
The Slits, Japanther (NY) and Teenagers In Tokyo
The Gaelic Club - thirty eight plus booking fee
Mieh. All-female 1970s epic punk-reggae thrash-rock revival is so overdone.
Props to: MTV Kickstart with Walrus, Pang, Mania, and the Shake Up. Did someone say bar tab?

Thursday
Garage to V ft. Temper Trap
(SeaBellies Vs Ouch! My Face! Vs the Butcher Birds Vs The Government)
The Gaelic Theatre
Four bands from four cities and four genres, and one wins a place at the V Festival (I'd say Seabellies or the Butcher Birds? Thoughts?). Temper Trap are headlining the night, and if you follow some links, its free! Click here to play..

Friday
Dead Frenchmen with Telecom
Candy's Apartment - ten dollars
This Melbourne three piece are launching their first full length 'Wonderland' and if you only see one album launch this year... Seriously. Also, invest some time in Telecom before they change their name and get sold by the government.

Saturday
Augie March, Holly Throsby, Joel Plaskett & The Emergency
Metro Theatre - thirty on the door
Joel Plaskett brings from Canada the exact melodic soft-rock you'd expect for an Augie/Holly support. I venture to predict a lovely evening all round.

Gameboy/Gamegirl

Melbourne (and Sydney), Australia
Jerry from Whothehell recommended we check these guys out. Gameboy/Gamegirl fall into the category of filthy, dirty electro bubblegum pop reinvented by Spank Rock early last year. After listening to these guys you know they're going to do well. They sit on the fence between indie and dance and have a solid sound that will be picked up by punters on either side. By the way, a special kudos to MTV's Kickstart program. They seem to be picking the cream of the crop of newcomers which is making our lives a whole lot easier. Gameboy/Gamegirl played in the Melbourne finals but lucked out to Dance With Voices (who played at an SClub night late last year). Speaking of which, this Wednesday night is the NSW finals where Walrus, Pang, The Mania, The Shake Up and Fergus Brown will battle it out for up'n'comer superiority. Personally I'm a big fan of Walrus and Pang so here's hoping.

Papa vs Pretty

Sydney, Australia
At a Sandwich Club night some months ago, we were fortunate enough to feature the 15 and 16 year old youngsters of Papa Vs Pretty; some of the finest musicians we've had play.
Considering their age, the world is their oyster and they're sucking them up like John Candy at an all you can eat seafood bar.
A few days ago, we were excited to hear some of their new songs they have available on myspace (and a couple here to download at your convenience). They've come along way since we last heard them and we can't just help feel excited about their future prospects.
Did I mention they're 15 and 16!?

Bonus Tracks! Ted Leo, Feist & Cajun Dance Party

Slowsville,
Argh! This week is really dragging on. My only desire at this point in time is to leave the work grinder for the big music festival in my mind. So in a SANDWICH CLUB first here are The Bonus Tracks for this week, and golly-gosh are they tasty. I hope they help you escape:

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are set to release their new album on the 20th of March, entitled Living With The Living. Below is a taster of what to expect. I love it!

MP3: Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Sons Of Cain
buy it - website

The great voice, strong rhythms and music you know from Feist are back with a new album you are going to be belting incessantly in the coming frosty months. This is easily one of my favorite songs so far for 2007. One of the best songs for escapism.

MP3: Feist - My Moon, My Man

buy it - myspace - website

Lastly, UK unknowns Cajun Dance Party caught my attention a month or so ago. They definately have a certain formula about their music, as do bands of similar breed such as Voxtrot and Razorlight. However, said formula has been quite successful in producing some incredibly viral tracks that grow on you from play count 1. This track in particular cheered me up and had me bopping. Ahh the sugar coated goodness!

The Chequered Leopards

Sydney, Australia
With more competitions going around than you can poke a spear at lately it is only too clear as to why a cluster of quality bands are emerging from the Sydney concrete jungle. One of these Sydney species to come out of camouflage lately has been The Chequered Leopards. Playing regular gigs in the frequented indie grazing grounds of the Hopetoun, World Bar, Candys Apartment and The Annandale has accrued these musical cubs a glutton of 'cred' in their short existence and resulted in airplay on FBi radio of late. All that is required is their lead leopard, Freddy (Toby) Fitch, to develop a louder, richer roar as time passes to match their untamed sound. I look forward to hearing it after some solid (well deserved) studio time. Packs of similar blues/rock breed include The Mess Hall, Kings Of Leon and The Black Keys. One of the tracks to stalk up behind me lately has been their wild one "Pollyanger". Their pacing rhythym and scuffing guitar hooks definately make you feel like you're out on the hunt. Grrrrrrr. Have a taste. Check them out on these dates:

30 March
MUM @ World Bar
w/ Tokyo Blonde

31 March
The Hopetoun Hotel
w/ Limousine, Sam Joole & the Heart Attack, Swimming Underground

28 April

Gig Pick Tuesday

Tuesdee:
Fionn Regan, Belles Will Ring, the Rise and Demise
The Basement - twentyfive + BF
Fionn Regan's page, Belles Will Ring
I'm a sucker for acoustic folk, Simon & Garfunkel, intricate guitar work, a soft voice and poetic lyricism so this pick should come as no surprise. He has an accent too..

Wednesdee:
Jager Uprising: Fait Accompli, Emergency! Emergency!, Call The Medic Call The Nurse
Raymond J's Back Bar, Annandale Hotel - FREEEEE!
Fait Accompli, Emergency!x2
Fait Accompli and Emergency! Emergency! have been buzzing round the Sandwich Club HQ for ages. We just want to call that before they get all famous and shit.

Thursdee:
Beach Ball: Midnight Juggernauts, Mess Hall, Mercy Arms, Sparkadia, Soft Tigers
Manning Bar at USYD - $10 for Access Card holders, or $15
Soft Tigers, Sparkadia, Mercy Arms
These bands are all doing wonders for the Sydney scene (we'll just pretend the Juggers are from Sydney), and should be duly congratulated by anyone reading this blog. Feel free to buy them a drink tonight, but take it easy because you have a big weekend coming up...

Fridee:
Boom Boom Mega Boom: See below for lineup
Candy's Apartment - twenty dollars
The Holidays, Bird Automatic, Bridezilla
The Ghosts, The Holidays, Bridezilla, The Hate Game, Cut Off Your Hands, Bird Automatic, PNAU, Van She Tech, Ajax, Gus Da Hoodrat, Jamie Doom, Ash Le Rouge. Just listing them takes up enough space.
FRIDAY PROPS: Its an Aussie blog, hence the focus on Aussie bands, but I couldn't not mention that WhoMadeWho are playing Boobytrap @ Melt for just twentyfive buckaroos.

Satdee:
PLAYGROUND WEEKENDER
Everybody is going.
Get your spend on

Officially, the festival starts on Friday, but the bill today borders on ridiculous(chk) A few clashes between the Filth stage and the Playground stage, but what it lacks in timetable it more than makes up for in lineup. We're very, very excited(chk)(chk)
Plan B: For something a bit quieter - Ned Collette
and New Buffalo are troubadouring the Vanguard for $12.

Sundee:
KEEGSTOCK - Laura Imbruglia, the Offcuts, Russian Brides, Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers, Richard In Your Mind and many more.
Annandale Hotel - fifteen at the door, ten for members. From 3:30pm
Cuthbert & The Night Walkers, Richard In Your Mind, Russian Brides
Another Sydney love-in? Congrats are due to Cuthbert & the Nightwalkers, who just won themselves a spot at the Great Escape c/o JJJ Unearthed. They'll be playing tunes with their friends in an afternoon event headlined by talent-full and genreless Offcuts, and the equally undefinable oddball Laura Imbruglia.

Mondee:
If you haven't spent all your money, danced your legs off and drunk yourself into oblivion by now you're a complete animal and I have nothing to say to you.

CONGRATULATIONS!
As a special sambo present for getting to the bottom of this post:

More Radelaide: Morals of A Minor

Adelaide, Australia
There is so much good music in Adelaide these days; Poly & The Statics, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!, City Riots, Lady Strangelove, No Through Road... pheeuw. Well I've been enlightened to another delightful band from the city of churches, Morals of A Minor. They cite influences from Floyd, The Police and U2; however I see more early eighties rock here. Explosive and energetic, definitely some Van Halen in there somewhere.
Morals of A Minor are currently making waves around Australia with high rotation on Triple J, a Big Day Out performance and an appearance in MTV's kickstart competition fought out in Adelaide last night (anyone know who won?).
Check out these great tracks. I'm particularly fond of 'Running Late'.

Fait Accompli

Sydney Australia
Having only formed around 6 months ago, this band is still far from a literal fait accompli. While they claim their sound is 'a landscape of emotional ideas which cascade between feelings of love, loss and towering strength', I suspect this may just be an excuse for a new band still trying to settle on a preferred style - a common yet exciting predicament.
Personally, I'm hoping they favour their floating rock sound employed on Ride, one of my favourite songs out of Sydney this year.
